Family… Friends… Food… and of course, FOOTBALL!!!
Thanksgiving is one of the greatest holidays in America.
My favorite part about Thanksgiving is getting the opportunity to spend time with the people I love. And spending that time with those people always includes plenty of food and plenty of football.
This has to be the most ideal holiday for a sports fan. This is a day where it’s OK to stuff your face with as much turkey, potatoes, stuffing and pie as you want. And then after a quick power nap, time to make a turkey sandwich, hit the couch and turn the tube on to watch football all day long! I wonder if the Pilgrims had any idea what they were starting.
But the best football to be played on Thanksgiving is not in Detroit. It’s not in Dallas either. It’s in Orem, Utah for the annual Turkey Bowl that my friends and I have been playing together since we were about 12 or 13 years old. And once again this year, the best football will be played at the Bruin Bowl at Mountain View High School where friendships and rivalries will be renewed for Turkey Bowl 2011!
We used to always play tackle football, but then we started to get old and injury prone. It seemed like our friend Mark was always the one getting hurt too. As I recall, Mark has broken a finger and busted his lip open on someone’s cleats and those two injuries happened in the same bowl game. We have since resorted to playing flag football for the Turkey Bowl, but it just gets better and better every year.
Troy, Sean, Rex, Randy, Justin, Allen, Jamie, Gabe, Justus, Dallas, Mark, Bill, Glenn, Chris, Isaac, Nate, Jeff G, the Bird brothers, Jackson L., Jed, the Jackson's, Gifford, and many others from over the years. It has always been a blast! Not everyone makes it every year, but I know a bunch of these guys will be there again this year and I can’t wait to see them all and “kick off” my Thanksgiving holiday with our good old fashioned Turkey Bowl!
Please share your Turkey Bowl memories and stories by leaving it in the comments box. And please have a very happy and safe Thanksgiving weekend!!!
