Kurtz's Top 25 CFB Rankings - 10/25/09

I have always been a big believer in Gary Patterson and the TCU Horned Frogs... but this just may be their year. I have ranked the Frogs #5 this week. However, Iowa is the biggest mover... up six spots to #4.

For a third straight year College Football's Harris Poll has extended me an invitation to be a Top 25 voter (1 of 114 in the country).  I am honored to be trusted with such a huge responsibility.  It's a role I am passionate about and take very seriously as the Harris Poll is a huge part of the BCS equation that determines who plays for a National Championship.  I will continue to make my votes public on this blog site.  Check in each Sunday morning to see how I voted.  Feel free to leave your thoughts, praise and/or criticisms in the "comment" feature on this page.

My top three this week remain unchanged... But it's #4-10 where it really gets complicated, and fun at the same time.  For the last decade, TCU has been a hidden gem on the college football landscape.  Overshadowed by teams in their own state, the Frogs play in relative anonymity.  But living where I live, and covering the teams I cover, each year I have the pleasure of watching Gary Patterson's team each week and let me tell you, these boys are GOOD!  Especially this year.  Look no further than what they did last night at BYU, hammering the Cougars by 31 points.  Andy Dalton is a three-year starter at Quarterback who out-shined the highly touted Max Hall, Jerry Hughes is the best defensive player in the nation and Gary Patterson is one of the best game day coaches in America.  TCU is privileged to have such a commodity roaming its sidelines.  After TCU's win, I have vaulted the Frogs to #5 this week... Ahead of Boise State and Cincinnati because of TCU's strength of schedule.  They have road wins at Virginia, Clemson, Air Force and BYU (all very tough places to win).  TCU has one last major hurdle to clear to crash the BCS on Nov. 14th when they host Utah.  I believe TCU has the credentials, talent and coaching to not only play in a BCS bowl game, but make a case to play in the National Title Game if Texas, Iowa, Florida, Alabama should lose a game.

Speaking of Iowa.  I am so happy for Kirk Ferentz.  He truly is one of the good guys in college football.  I had the pleasure of being around him when I worked in Iowa back in 2001-2002.  Talk about a great motivator.  He has the Hawkeyes off to the best start in school history thanks to a dramatic win at Michigan State on Saturday night.  A touchdown with no time left on the clock has preserved an undefeated record and makes them a Top 4 team this week.  The Hawkeyes, just like TCU, are looking at Nov. 14th as a day they can make a final statement in 2009 when Iowa travels to the horseshoe in Columbus to battle the Ohio State Buckeyes.

A few final thoughts on this week.... Boise State's win at Hawaii is bigger than it appears.  That road trip is always tough on every WAC team.  A 45-point win proves this team is all about business.  Cincinnati's ability to win (41-10 over Louisville) without Tony Pike was key in my mind.  It proved the Bearcats are a great "team" and not overly reliant on the Heisman caliber signal caller.   I have Boise State #7 this week, Cincinnati #8.
