Jesse Kurtz's Top 25 Poll - Sunday, November 23rd

The BCS is in trouble now... But not as much trouble as the Big 12.

We've got controversy!

Oklahoma threw a giant-sized wrench in the BCS...  All you haters, rejoice!  Now six or seven teams believe they have a legitimate claim to be #2 and should have the inside track to a national title game berth.  The BCS is in trouble.  But the Big 12 is in even MORE trouble.

It is a crying shame that Missouri will play in the Big 12 Title game instead of Oklahoma, Texas or Texas Tech.  It is blatently obvious the top four teams in the Big 12 are in the South.  But the way the system works, #1 will play #5 with a berth in the national title game on the line.  If I understand the "tie breaker" correctly, the BCS rankings will decide who "wins" the Big 12 South.  In my case, I give the nod to the Longhorns.

My reasoning for ranking Texas ahead of Oklahoma is simple:  The 'Horns beat the Sooners on a neutral field.  They proved they were the better team with no inherant advantages (ie: home field).  I hear ya Tech fans... YOU beat Texas.  True.  But that was on the back end of a four-game stretch that saw the Texas knock off three top-11 teams in a row.  Plus, Texas had you beat until the final 15 seconds.  I feel your pain Red Raider nation.  It is not a perfect world.  It is not a perfect system.  Somebody had to lose out, and unfortunetely it's you.  But understand this...  Texas Tech knew what it had to do.  They had the "inside track" to the BCS National Title Game.  Beat Oklahoma, and you're in.  No questions asked.  You didn't, and now you're out of picture.  The sad reality is, Tech may be out of the BCS picture all together since only two Big 12 teams can qualify for a BCS bowl game in the same year (Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri all have a better chance at this point).

Congratulations to the Utah Utes.  Mountain West Champs and BCS crashers!  After beating BYU, I have jumped the Utes over USC to the #5 spot.  Here's why....  Utah is 12-0, USC is 9-1.  Utah beat three BCS Top 25 teams.  USC has beaten two.  USC's only loss is to Oregon State, the same team Utah beat in early October.  Congrats Utah!  You deserve this.

Until next week, keep livin' the dream!  Jesse Kurtz, KKTV Sports Anchor/Reporter
