Jesse Kurtz's Top 25 Poll - Sunday, September 14

USC was very impressive with a blowout win over Ohio State.... BUT, they still aren't my #1 team in the land.

College football season is back....  I admit it, I am a junkie.  I can't get enough of it.  Thanks to TiVo, I watch more than I should (at least according to my wife).

I am honored to have been asked to return as a Top 25 voter again this year for the Harris Poll (there are only 114 in the country!).  The Harris Poll factors into the BCS Standings that ultimately determines who will play for a national championship!  Each Sunday, I will make my Top 25 public on my blog at because I think it's important to be open about where I rank each team.  In my mind, it demonstrates a little bit more accountability (helps keep me honest too).  I welcome discussion about my rankings through your comments at the top of the page.  Let me know what ya think!  With that said...  Here are my thoughts from the first few weeks of the season.

WOW!  USC looked amazing last night against Ohio State.  Shame on me for believing the Buckeyes would keep it close.  I actually thought they had a chance to win if Beanie Wells would have played.  WRONG!  Typical Ohio State... Start out fast in big games, then get punched in the mouth and never pick themselves off the mat.  The Trojans are even better than I thought they were at the start of the season.  But, there is a team I have liked better from day one....

Boomer, Boomer Sooner!  Oklahoma is my number one team.   Their offensive line is a major reason.  OU starts four seniors (including Fountain-Fort Carson Alum, Phil Loadholt) and one junior.  Experience is a huge advantage on the offensive line.  I also am a big Sam Bradford fan!   A sophomore, who plays like a fifth-year senior.

Don't read too much into Georgia's (#3) narrow win over South Carolina.  ANY road win in the SEC is a good win.  I was impressed with the way they pulled together down the stretch.  Missouri (#5) looks like the real deal too.

Finally, kudos to the Mountain West.  Maybe the most talented the conference has EVER been.  BYU (#14) hangs 59 points on UCLA.  The Cougars offense is back to the glory days and looked to be ready for a BCS run.  However, don't sleep on Utah (#16).  I think the Utes may be the team that knocks BYU off this year with a home game in Salt Lake City.  If that happens, Utah could be headed back to the BCS for the second time in four years.  TCU (#22) also will be force in the conference and is the third MWC team in my Top 25 this week.

If that Nebraska, Texas game would have been Nebraska and Colorado, the game would have just ended with Nebraska winning.

Jesse did you forget about Nebraska against Texas? They deserve a little respect don't you think? Gary

I am open to Oklahoma over USC......only slightly so. Oregon just didn't show me enough to move up six spots to #10. I also have not totally bought into the Crimson Tide either. Thank goodness the play three more ranked teams this season to make their statement :-)
