2013 Broncos: Brandon Spiegel's 53-man Roster Prediction

Looking at the Broncos’ roster there are about 40 players who it’s pretty easy to say will make the team. The Peyton Manning’s and Champ Bailey’s of the world.  But the Broncos’ staff is going to have a lot of tough choices.

First at running back, lots of people have jumped on the C.J. Anderson bandwagon, and rightfully so. He looked great in the first preseason game, but I am still giving the edge to Jeremiah Johnson right now. He’s hurt and missed the game, but he has been making big plays in camp and he’s also out of practice squad eligibly.  However, if Anderson has another big game against the Seahawks on Saturday, it’s going to be hard for the Broncos to keep him off the 53-man roster, because if they cut him, he’ll probably end up on some other teams’ roster.

While I’m giving the edge to the injured player at running back that’s what’s preventing Greg Orton from being on the roster, as of now at wide receiver. I think the coaching staff likes him, and at 6’3’’ he is another big target, but he needs to be on the field. Andre Caldwell is making the most of his reps right now, which currently gives him the nod.

I think the Broncos will keep 4 tight ends at the beginning of the season with the injuries to Dreessen and Tamme.  However, I left Virgil Green off the roster right now to get another linebacker on the team (see below).

There are seven locks to make the roster on the offensive line: Clady, Beadles, Lilja, Vasquez, Franklin, Clark and Ramirez. The others two spots were a tossup for me. Clark is probably going to be the backup at both tackle spots, Ramirez or Lilja, whichever does not start, can backup at either guard or center. Philip Blake can also do that which is why I am giving him a spot, and I am giving the nod to Vinston Paitner because the Broncos saw something in him to draft him in the 5th round this year. The O-line is subject to change however, if Kuper and Walton can come off the PUP list.

I feel the Broncos will keep seven linebackers because of Shaun Phillips. He’s listed as a linebacker but he is going to play a lot of defensive end. I think that helps Steven Johnson make the roster, because it looks like both Johnson and Nate Irving are take reps at outside linebacker positions as well.

The final spot in the secondary was tough to place. I kept switching out Quinton Carter and Omar Boldon. Carter was the starter ahead of Rahim Moore in their rookie season, but Carter is injured all the time. And with the emergence of Duke Ihenacho at safety I think that makes Carter (the teams 4th round pick in 2011) expendable. So give the team six cornerback and four safeties. Quinton Jammer is learning to play safety and is stuck way down the depth chart. With Moore, Ihenacho, Adams and Burton the position is solid, plus the two  safeties that don’t start will play special teams, and I don’t see Jammer running down the field to cover a punt. Remember, just last season the Broncos signed veteran cornerback Drayton Florence in the offseason and cut him in August.  They kept a young kid named Tony Carter and that seemed to work out pretty well, so cutting Jammer would not be a huge surprise.

I skipped over quarterback and defense line, because I wanted to keep too many skill players so there was no room for Dysert, and you can never have enough guys to get after the quarterback on the D-line.

Currently my last 3 on the team are: Jeremiah Johnson, Steven Johnson and Omar Boldon. First three out are:  Virgil Green, Greg Orton and CJ Anderson. But this is all really subject to change after the next preseason game.
