Jesse Kurtz's Top 25 Poll - Sunday, December 2nd

Final rankings reveal a Buckeyes-Tigers National Championship

Wow!  What a college football season.  A year to expect the unexpected.  Crazy upsets that changed the top-25 more than Elizabeth Taylor changes husbands.

With Missouri AND West Virginia losing last night, Ohio State and LSU slip into my national championship.  Ohio State is #1 because they are the only one-loss team from a major conference.  And LSU because they did not lose a single game in regulation.  It took six overtimes to hand the Tigers two lossesin 2007.  They are the most deserving two-loss team in the country.

Many believe Georgia deserved a shot.  Even though I like the way the Bulldogs are playing, I couldn't vote them in the top-2 because they didn't play in their conference championship game.  Same goes for one-loss Kansas.  The Jayhawks end up at #8 in my final poll for a couple of reasons.  Despite only having one loss, I could not vote them higher than Oklahoma (who won the Big 12) or Missouri (the Tigers beat them two weeks ago).  Kansas had a very nice season, but a schedule that included cupcakes in non-conference play, and a conference schedule that did NOT include Texas or Oklahoma, leaves a lot to be decided about how good Kansas really is.  Finishing the season at #8 is nothing to be ashamed of.  In fact, the Jayhawks should be VERY proud.

Finally, I have to address Hawaii.  The Warriors showed a ton of heart last night, rallying from 21 points down to beat Washington.  They deserve a BCS bid after going 12-0.  However, I won't listen to the argument that they should play for a national title.  Hawaii checks in at #9 in my final poll.

Thanks for checking in each and every week to keep up with my Top-25 rankings.  It has been fun.  It has also been a learning experience.  This is VERY tough.  I have a new appreciation for those who have voted in the Top-25 for decades.  It takes time, and attention to detail.  I hope I did college football justice with my work this season.  I look forward to doing it all over again next fall.

Jesse don't forget to mention hawaii's offensive coordinator from last season who move to Portland State this year, Mouse Davis the run and shoot legend and Jerry Glanville. PS Tell your mom and grampa hello from Frank Williams. Do you remember me?

I don't feel/believe LSU belongs in the National Title game with two losses. So what if they were in triple overtime? Both losses were to unranked teams. IF LSU was/is so good those games should have never went to OT. This is just one more instance to validate the bias for the SEC. Oklahoma, Hawaii and Georgia should all raise a concern.

Jeff... I didn't say Georgia didn't deserve to be ranked high. I said they didn't deserve to play in a national title because they didn't play in their conference title game. Truth be told, I think Georgia is playing THE best football of anybody in the country. However, their body of work is not as good as LSU's. It is better than Oklahoma's and USC's. That is why I have Georgia ranked ahead of the Sooners and Trojans.

Jesse, what are you thinking? You say Georgia doesn't deserve a chance to get in because they didn't play in their conference championship game but then rank them ahead of Oklahoma and Virginia Tech, who both won their conf. champ. games? Either be consistent and put them behind the conference champs(including USC), or go ahead and put them where they belong, ahead of LSU. And you say you won't listen, but Hawaii only 9th? College football gives us the bs line about "every game counts" and "every game's a playoff game", so why would you put 6 teams that lost TWO games ahead of an undefeated team? What kind of playoff lets you lose two games and still play for the title? Didn't you learn anything from Boise St-OU last year? The WAC champ can obviously compete against the "big time" schools, why not give them a chance? Is it because they played in a weak conference and didn't play any tough teams in non-conference games? Can't be, because that's Ohio St, and you put them #1.
