Wow! What a college football season. A year to expect the unexpected. Crazy upsets that changed the top-25 more than Elizabeth Taylor changes husbands.
With Missouri AND West Virginia losing last night, Ohio State and LSU slip into my national championship. Ohio State is #1 because they are the only one-loss team from a major conference. And LSU because they did not lose a single game in regulation. It took six overtimes to hand the Tigers two lossesin 2007. They are the most deserving two-loss team in the country.
Many believe Georgia deserved a shot. Even though I like the way the Bulldogs are playing, I couldn't vote them in the top-2 because they didn't play in their conference championship game. Same goes for one-loss Kansas. The Jayhawks end up at #8 in my final poll for a couple of reasons. Despite only having one loss, I could not vote them higher than Oklahoma (who won the Big 12) or Missouri (the Tigers beat them two weeks ago). Kansas had a very nice season, but a schedule that included cupcakes in non-conference play, and a conference schedule that did NOT include Texas or Oklahoma, leaves a lot to be decided about how good Kansas really is. Finishing the season at #8 is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, the Jayhawks should be VERY proud.
Finally, I have to address Hawaii. The Warriors showed a ton of heart last night, rallying from 21 points down to beat Washington. They deserve a BCS bid after going 12-0. However, I won't listen to the argument that they should play for a national title. Hawaii checks in at #9 in my final poll.
Thanks for checking in each and every week to keep up with my Top-25 rankings. It has been fun. It has also been a learning experience. This is VERY tough. I have a new appreciation for those who have voted in the Top-25 for decades. It takes time, and attention to detail. I hope I did college football justice with my work this season. I look forward to doing it all over again next fall.
