On average, February is the second driest month of the year for Colorado Springs and the driest month of the year for Pueblo.  Sure hasn't been that way for the first 9 days of the month.  So far, Colorado Springs has picked up 5.5" of snow for the month.  Pueblo isn't far behind, tallying 5.3".  Keep in mind, we have already surpassed the normal snowfall for the month for both cities.  In fact, Pueblo, only averages 3.6" for the month.  After such a dry November and January, it is nice to get some snow.  Where do we sit for the season?  Check it out below:

Colorado Springs:                23.5"                              20.1"                                -3.4"

Pueblo:                                21.1"                                       15.5"                                           -5.6"

Last year at this time, Colorado Springs had only received 11.5" and Pueblo a meager 5.1".  Last year we were under the influence of La Nina, which is notorious for producing dry Winters for Southern Colorado.  This year, we've been under the influence of an El Nino.  Areas just to our south and east have had exellent snowfall this Winter, especially Texas and Oklahoma.  Usually, El Nino gives us adequate snowfall for the Winter, and good snow and rain in the Spring.  March and April are usually pretty active during an El Nino, and I still think that will happen.  However, it is nice to get some snow, during an otherwise dry month.  Here's hoping that it keeps up...

    Brian, how does this period's snowfall total compare with the period of December 2006 to February 2007--the time when there were two major blizzards in a week plus a number of snowstorms on a weekly basis that seemed to last until the first week of February? And has this been a relatively wet period for a while--I don't remember it raining as much as it did for most of last summer and early fall(?); how is the precip. totals for last year and so far this year adding up compared to normal? ------------------------- Daniel, Julio, Ed: Evidently none of you were here three years ago when it seemed there was a LOT MORE SNOW falling; some areas over here didn't get rid of their drifts until MID MARCH! (Not the snow piles, the snow DRIFTS!) And, BTW: Snow IS the worst thing if you have to DRIVE IN IT; there were too many experiences of close calls for me then (including driving home twice just as blizzards were intensifying) to last for the next ten years.

    You guys are a tough crowd...lol. Not sure what you are talking about with the high snow estimates. Maybe you were watching another station. Check my blog posted on last Thursday. The timing changed a bit, but not the overall totals. Plus, last Winter was a lot drier than this Winter. If the storm that happened late last March didn't happen, it would have been the least snowy Winter on record. See, it could always be worse... Thanks for reading our blog.

    Agree with Julio and Ed here. This winter sucks more than any winter I've had. Stop giving us high snow estimates and then changing it down to trace to one inch. It only ticks your views off. And quit apologizing about snow like its the worst thing in the world. WE LIKE SNOW! Why do you think we live in Colorado?

    Stressing and worrying and getting very upset about something as changeable as weather just makes your life miserable. Accept the weather as is, enjoy what weather we do have, and maybe you will be a happier person.

    to make a move to another location such as Monument or north of there, is so much easier said than done, there may be very limmiting economic factors that makes this not a feasible option for ' most of us.. remember, Monument & north the real estate is about 2.5 - 4 times more costly than what it is further south. snow belt areas seems to carry a very high price premium than the 'dry' areas such as where Julio, Ed, myself & others are located.. it is our bad luck to be stuck with no options avaiable for relocating. we are most unfortunate to not be able to locate in the snow areas. i also believe march & april will fail to deliever here, may end up too warm so be mostly rain mixed with little wet snow, anything we get here. jon

    I keep hearing everyone say wait 'till March and April.... does anybody remember the last El Nino year we had (06/07)? March of 2007 we got only a trace of snow for the entire month...which tied a record for the lowest ever in the month of March. Then in April we had only 3.5 inches for the month...So, forgive me for being skeptical...this winter has just been one disappointment after another. don't think anything will change...I'm sure we'll get another nuisance storm or two...but I feel sure we'll fall below normal once again. Tom, in reading your comment about the springs nd snowfall - the weather has always been measured at the airport if I am correct...meaning we get those "norms" of over 40 inches from those figures...we haven't seen those types of numbers in a long, long time. Ed, Im with you - throw in the towel! Game is over!

    If you don't like the lack of snowfall in Colorado Springs, think about making a move to an area over the Palmer Divide or somewhere in Denver. Both of these areas got slammed in October 2009 when a storm dropped anywhere from 14-40 inches of snow. However, Colorado Springs was left with only a dusting to a few inches. Remember, Colorado Springs is not known for it's heavy snowfall, since the majority of our big snow producers have a strong northerly flow component. This causes the Springs to be left out when areas just 20 miles north are being hammered.

    I'll have to say this winter is not so bad but not what I expected etheir we are still a bit behind in snowfall but it is nothing compared to last winter which was the worst winter I have ever had I call it the driest winter on record in my book

    Yet another "storm" that will miss us. I'm sick of this. Every time, same story. Let's just call this winter a failure in regards to snow and just admit defeat. The rest of the country won, we lost. Below normal snowfall again. Probably the same story next year, and the next, and the next. In fact, for the next 15 or so years - according to Bledsoe. El nino sucks. La nina sucks. Winter weather for the past decade here has sucked. Bleh.

    Yeah, certainly doesn't look promising for anything significant. One of those deals where a few areas get a few snow showers, but not every single day. Hate the pattern, cuz there is nothing clear cut about it...

    accu weather's 18 inch i did not find, i looked at their web site for this area, & all i could find was a forecast for a total of about 6.5 inch over a 4day spread.. nothing to be real excited about. your broom will keep your walks perfectly clear when applied... jon

    18inches !!!! gad what optimism ! hardly ever, try converting that to say 18 millimeters, be more accurate... thanks for the ' heads up ' about accu weather, as i also been checking on their forecasts, ususlly only for temperature trends... jon
