Why Wait For New Year's? (Stacia Naquin)

Wow - where did the summer go? You might say I took a vacation from healthy eating. But as I head into another birthday, it's time to get back on track! And I'm not waiting for New Year's.

The beginning of 2010 marked a turning point in my quest for health. Instead of just working out (as I had always done), I added healthy eating to the mix. Wow! What a difference! It's amazing what a good mix of carbs, protein and fats will do.

I wasn't trying to lose weight. I was tryingto give my body the fuel it needs. I did lose some weight. But mostly, I got a healthier BMI and more energy! And I kept it up through May.

Then summer came. I just KNEW I would get even healthier. Unfortunately, that is NOT what happened. In fact, the opposite happened. My schedule completely changed and that really threw me off. (After the news, I teach at Pikes Peak Community College during the fall and spring.) I suddenly had more free time!  But I wasn't spending it in the gym. I was just hanging out, enjoying the lazy days of summer. And I got pretty lazy.

But that's about to change. I'm back to my crazy schedule with teaching tacked on to my day. So that's giving me more structure. But that's not all... I'm also about to have a birthday. I turn 32 this Saturday. It's not a big birthday necessarily. But for some reason, birthdays just make us take stock, don't they?

I want to live a long, HEALTHY life. So, to do that, I need to workout AND eat clean. And I need to do it on a daily basis. I want a healthy heart. I want strong bones. And someday, when I have kids, I want to be able to keep up with them!

So, I'm not waiting for New Year's to get healthier. I'm starting right after I turn 32! Why after, you say? Well... first, there's birthday cake to eat.
