If you’ve checked out this blog before, you may be familiar with my love-hate relationship with vegetables. I know I’m supposed to eat them. I just don’t… as much as I know I should. (That’s especially the case when you factor in my background, which you’ll read about in a moment.) In fact, every year, my New Year’s Resolution is to eat something green every day. I’m probably 80% faithful to that goal. And I know that’s still not good enough.
But I am re-inspired! I took part in a health expo for El Paso County on Friday called The Weight of El Paso County. It included a screening of part of HBO’s new documentary Weight of the Nation. Wow. That documentary took the wind right out of my junk food sail! This chick needs more fruits and veggies.
And that was also proven to me during the expo part of the event. One of the booths was hosted by D-11 and their “Good Food Project,” which works to get healthier foods into our cafeterias. The booth featured a vegetable quiz. I was challenged to look at the 10 veggies in front of me and identify them. Hmmmmmmm…
I’m going to be honest when I say… I was a little overwhelmed by it. I knew some of them. But I didn’t know all of them. Not by a long shot! Some of them I was completely baffled by!! (Jicama?? Huh?!) I got an 80%. So there were 4 that stumped me.
Let me put this into perspective for you, as far as my background. I was raised a vegetarian. No seriously! My family was vegetarian until I was about 5. So my lack of veggie knowledge shows just how far away I’ve gotten from my healthy roots. (Needless to say, I have not told my mom about this poor vegetable quiz showing.)
So this quiz was quite eye-opening for me, along with the Weight of the Nation documentary. In fact, I’ll be blogging about some of the notes I made all week long! I hope you’ll join me with your thoughts on some tough topics that we can’t ignore, as far as obesity right here in our community!
In the meantime, I’m going to re-acqaint myself with my vegetable friends – like C.J. Moore here with Kaiser Permanente at the health expo. According to that quiz, I’ve got some work to do! But I think I’m up to the challenge.
