I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. I’m just not a runner. But I try! And I’ll be trying again over the next month, as I get ready for the annual Run To The Shrine at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo!
If you’ve ever run in this 5 or 10K yourself, you know it’s mostly uphill. Yikes! And I have to be honest. I have not forgotten how hard it was to run that 5K last year. So it’s kind of intimidating me and making it hard for me to get started with my training! And let’s be honest - I NEED to train!! I can’t just show up on Saturday, May 19th and expect to live through the run without spending some time running… and running uphill.
So I turned to one of my newsroom pals for some expert inspiration. Lindsey Grewe is our web producer and an avid runner – since the 8th grade! She really puts in the time, running 50-60 miles a week. And she’s about to up that number to 90 as she trains for a marathon in October.
I said to her… “Lindsey, I’m struggling! What do I do to get motivated?!”
She was a straight-shooter. “You’ve just got to force yourself to do it,” she said.
Plain and simple.
I asked her if she’s ever felt uninspired about getting in her runs. She told me yes, but that she always works through it.
“I just wake up and know that I’m going to get that run in somehow. It doesn’t matter what time it happens,” she said. “It just matters that at some point in that day, I need to run.”
That makes sense. Even if you have to put it in your planner! (And I might actually have to do that…) Make a running appointment and keep it!
“Once you give yourself permission to miss it, it gets really easy to keep skipping your runs,” she said.
Ouch. She caught me before I could even flake! Haha
So I’m headed home from work to throw on those running shoes and get in my first official uphill training run! I hope you’ll follow along here on the blog. And feel free to leave YOUR advice about how you get yourself geared up for a workout – running or not. I need ALL the help I can get!!
