Whether you're a Republican, Democrat or (fill in the blank), there's one thing everyone seems to agree on. Our nation is dealing with an epidemic. 72 million Americans are obese. And that weighs in at a heavy cost for all of us. So if you’ve ever need motivation to get moving – here it is! President Obama wants you and your whole family to get active. That’s why he’s issuing the President’s Challenge. It will allow you to earn a PALA – Presidential Active Lifestyle Award. It’s something the First Family is doing together. I found out first hand from the President’s personal trainer, Cornell McClellan. He’s the official White House fitness trainer. Here’s what he told me about this new fitness challenge and what it’s like to train the First Family. Read on past the picture:
Stacia: First question for you. What is a typical workout like for the Commander-In-Chief?
Cornell: A typical workout would be doing some cardio and probably lifting some iron.
S: And I’m sure you get this all the time. Are you the one who helps the First Lady get those arms?
C: I’ve been working with her for about 14 years. So, if there’s anybody to get some blame for that, it would be me.
S: Blame! What is the key to those fabulous arms, so we can all have them?
C: The key is what we’re asking people to do today. It’s about lifestyle. It’s about being active on a daily basis. That’s the key. And so that’s why we’re asking people to earn their PALA, Presidential Active Lifestyle Award.
S: How do we get involved in that? I mean, anytime you can get Presidential approval, it makes you feel that much better!
C: That’s why the President is giving approval. That’s why you’re getting the certificate, because we know that it helps people to feel better. You do that by going to the website http://www.presidentschallenge.org/ You go on the website and you can track your activity there. We’re asking people to take 6 weeks, 5 days per week, 30 minutes a day for adults… 60 minutes a day for children. We want to get people active.
S: Is there a deadline to sign up?
C: You need to be signed up no later than August 22nd, because by September 30th we want to have all these numbers logged in and we’re trying to do well over 1,000,000. So we need your support! The country needs this. We can rid our nation of obesity. And that’s what we’re trying to do. This is about prevention.
S: And parents can be such a big part of that, by setting a good example for their kids. How do you think the President and First Lady set a good example for Sasha and Malia when it comes to fitness and a healthy lifestyle?
C: I think they’re the perfect example of what we can do as parents to set an example for our children. The First Lady, for example, was one of the first people to receive her PALA. So, she’s done this. I’ve personally recorded every jump rope, every lunge, every punch kick that she threw. I think without a doubt that has motivated their children. Their children are very active and involved in sports and games. And so that’s why we’re asking people – parents – please, let’s get off the couch. Go to the website, track it, get the recognition, get the award, hang it up in the family room, hang it somewhere. You’ll know it. Your kids will know it… that you’re active. You’re going to feel better. You’re going to feel empowered!
