One Tough Summer - (Stacia Naquin)

The fires, the shooting... there have been some long, hard days in the news business this summer. Here's what I do to clear my head when the headlines get tough.

It’s been one tough summer for Colorado.
And it’s been tough to report on. Between the Waldo Canyon Fire, the Aurora Theater Shooting and all the tough headlines in between, I’ll admit... I’ve had days where I could barely make it to the car before the tears started to flow, just trying to process everything I’ve had to report.
I hope I’m composed on air. That’s my job. But I feel all the same things that you do as we learn about these stories together.  And at the end of the day… I have to find a way to clear my head.
In addition to the wonderful listening ear of my husband, here are three things that have helped me do that.
I’ve been spending a lot of time in the garden.  Here’s a pic from my daisies in the front yard. They started blooming in the middle of our fire coverage. And every couple of days, I would go out and pick some. There were daisies all over my house. I gave some to friends.  A daisy just seems like such a happy flower! It was nice to just have them around.
In addition to my husband, my pups are also great listeners. And they’re all a fantastic distraction! Here's Charley and Payton with me in the backyard. I worked some crazy hours this summer. So it was always nice to come home to their happy faces. We went on new walks. We played outside. We had a good time! What better distraction could there be??
But the other thing that stands out with getting my mind off of the news was – big surprise – working out! We all know it’s a great stress reliever. So I put that to the test this summer! I ran. I stepped. I lifted. I lunged. It was just about moving! I’ve also done quite a bit of hiking this summer. And that’s been wonderful too – to see all the beauty that remains. The pic above is from Middle Columbine Trail in North Cheyenne Canyon.
We are SO LUCKY to live in Colorado. And I know I’m lucky to do what I do for a living. I’m proud of the coverage we provided during some tough times this summer. But I’m really thankful for these stress relievers too that help get me re-focused so I can come back and be part of whatever the news brings tomorrow!
What are your tips for stress relief? I’m always up for new ideas!
