Lazy Days - (Stacia Naquin)

Technology is wonderful. But it's costing us some calorie-burn. Here are some ways I've been trying to turn that around!

We’re lazy. It’s true if we really think about it.
And I’m not talking about working out. I’m talking about all the other stuff.
We are a nation dependent on our technology! Car depenedent, e-mail dependent, remote dependent etc. And that’s costing us a serious calorie burn! That was one of the issues brought up in the HBO documentary Weight of the Nation this past weekend when it debuted at the Weight of El Paso County event. I’ve been blogging about everything I took away from it.
The documentary talks about all of our fantastic technology and how our need for immediacy in everything we do is cutting off hundreds of calories of activity.
Think about it! Everyone used to walk to school. Now kids live too far and have to be bused to and from school. No calories burned. Or… people would farm their land. Now they have machinery to help them with the harvest. Things like that!
I was talking to my husband about this particular aspect of the movie and how we’re a nation at the mercy of deadlines and immediacy. He said – you’re right! And then he brought up a really good point. We live, literally, around the corner from our grocery store and I can count on one hand the times I’ve walked there. We always, always drive. It’s not like we just moved here! We’ve lived in our house for almost four years. That’s terrible!!! (For our waistlines, use of gas, the environment, etc) We both agreed – we need to start walking there more.
And we have. Since our talk, we’ve walked to the store a couple of times! We do it when we’re picking up a few items – nothing crazy. You do have to make the time to do it. But it doesn’t that THAT much time!
I’ve also been thinking about how this discussion applies when I’m at work. We each get a few hundred e-mails everyday in the newsroom. (I’m sure your work is the same.) And given the volume of what I have to respond to, it’s much easier to just HIT reply instead of walking somewhere to reply. But now that I’m aware of just how little I’m moving through the work day, I’m trying to get up and around more.
It takes just a few minutes to walk across the newsroom, chat about whatever the issue may be and then walk back to my desk! It’s a good leg stretch. It’s a good break for my eyes from my computer! And by the end of the day, a little more movement is going to burn a few more calories.
And there’s nothing wrong with that!
