KKTV Fit Club Celebrity Spotlight on Candace Cameron Bure

You probably know her as DJ Tanner, from Full House. But Candace Cameron Bure has MUCH more going on than just reruns. She has a family, a TV show, a movie, a book, etc. AND she still has time to make her health a priority.

 

There’s something to be said for clean-cut, family-friendly TV. Maybe that’s why “Full House” is still on the air in reruns. My favorite character? DJ Tanner . How lucky was Kimmy Gibbler to have such a rad best friend?! So you can imagine my excitement when I found my childhood television hero on twitter and saw all that Candace Cameron Bure is up to these days. She’s a working mom/wife with 3 kids!! You can see her every week in the ABC Family show “Make It Or Break It.” She also has a new TV movie out this weekend, “Truth Be Told” airing this Saturday on Fox. It’s about a marriage counselor who conspires with an old college friend to pose as a married couple after she gets an invitation that could lead to her dream job. But wait! That’s not it. In addition to her acting career, she also has speaking engagements all over the country, talking about her faith. AND she now has a book out, “Reshaping It All: Motivation for Physical and Spiritual Fitness.” Whew! Talk about a lot on her plate… I managed to squeeze in an e-mail interview with her about all this and more. Read on for some fitness inspiration from the woman who is still our favorite sitcom teen:
 
 
 
Stacia: First of all, I’m a huge fan. Full House is still my favorite show. I always thought DJ Tanner was the coolest. Do you get that a lot?
Candace: Awww, thanks! Yes, I still get that a lot. I think Full House has definitely gone down in the history books as one of the classic and timeless family shows. And I'm so proud to have been a part of it. 
 
        Stacia: What’s a typical day in the life of Candace Cameron Bure?
Candace: On a work day or non-work day? I don't know that any day is typical around my house. Between my schedule, my husbands and the kids... every day is an adventure! When I'm not working, a typical day is waking up at 5am, working out from 5:30-6:30, then making lunches and helping the kids get ready for school. 7:15 we leave and my day of "to do's" start around 8:30. That could include radio and media interviews, meetings and typical errands. Pick up kids at 3pm and we're off to figure skating lessons and hockey practice. Dinner at home, help with homework and I'm in bed by 9pm. When I'm working on my show "Make It Or Break It" my day usually starts at 3:30am to be on set by 5:30am I may get home around 8pm and again in bed by 9! 
 
Stacia: Describe your perfect workout.
Candace: Weight training for 25 minutes followed by 30 minutes of cardio. If it's a beautiful day outside, I prefer a slow jog or long walk. But many times, I'm on the elliptical machine to maximize my time. I also LOVE Pilates. I also try to find ways to squeeze in more exercise during the day, like taking the stairs whenever possible-especially if it's more than 3 flights. Yesterday I parked on the 6th floor of the parking structure. I wouldn't dream of taking an elevator up or down unless I had high heels on. :) I'll also do lunges if I find a long hallway (airports seem to be great for that!). It sounds funny... and I say that part in jest... but my point being, you can always find a way to exercise even if it's for 5 minutes here and there. 
 
Stacia: Why was it important to you to write “Reshaping It All”?
Candace: So many of us struggle with our weight and are on the weight loss/weight gain roller coaster of life. While there are many great diet plans out there that work, most of our struggles come down to staying motivated and on track. Success came for me only when I learned to retrain my mind. I had to view my relationship with food in a new way so I could once and for all conquer a mentality of a body that lacked self control time and time again. This book was written to all the women that talked to me about my transformation over the years. It came down to putting my faith into the forefront of my relationship with food. 
 
 
Stacia: You do a lot of speaking engagements all over the country. How do you find the time/energy to get a workout in while you’re on the road?
Candace: My schedule can be difficult at times, especially when I'm traveling. My running shoes always go in my bag with a pair of workout pants and a t-shirt. I aim to work out at least 4 times a week and if i'm gone for a 24 trip, I don't sweat it if I can't get a workout in. But most hotels offer a gym and if they don't, I can easily do a 30 minutes workout with no equipment just in my room. Ab exercises, squats, lunges, push ups, jumping jacks etc. go a long way!! The fact is, I may have to wake up an hour early, but I feel so much better when I work out and it's no longer a burden. It took close to 10 years to get there and view exercise that way, but I'm glad I stuck with it and see it as a benefit to my health and something I look forward to most days. 
 
Stacia: Your daughter is now getting into the acting business. How do you work to make sure she maintains a healthy body image?
Candace: Business or no business, I ensure my kids have a healthy body image by teaching them about food and exercise. It's important that we keep the body God gave us in good condition so we can be used to our best abilities. My kids grocery shop and cook with us, so they're not only learning the importance of healthy foods, but how much fun it is to make new things that taste great. We also place a heavy importance on exercise and each of my kids have found a sport that they love.

Stacia: How does your faith influence your idea of a healthy lifestyle?
Candace: Like I mentioned in the previous question, God gave us our bodies. And like a car that a friend loaned to you, you wouldn't return it without gas and all dirty and banged up. We too need to keep our bodies in good shape by taking care of it so that we can do all that God has planned for us. I keep God in the forefront of my relationship with food because He does care what I eat and cares about every small decision I make throughout the day. When I view God as my personal trainer and having accountability with Him, my faith helps me to stay focused and on the right track.
