In It Together!

Making 2011 my healthiest year yet is going to be a lot easier now that my husband is working towards the same goal. That hasn't always been the case in our house.

One is the loneliest number. And that is never more evident than when you’re working out and eating healthy… but you’re the only one in your house taking part.
It makes it a lot harder to stick to your fitness goals.
Don’t get me wrong. My husband has ALWAYS encouraged me. When I trained for a half-marathon a few years ago, he cheered me on through my training and across the goal line. But running 13.1 miles just wasn’t something he felt compelled to do himself. Last year when I started eating healthier and using a BodyBugg to track my calorie burn, he was excited for me that I was seeing results. But again, it wasn’t something he felt compelled to do.
That’s been the case until recently. My husband has just found a new focus on his health. And it’s really helping me!
Now, he’s bringing ideas to the table too when it comes to healthier dinners. For example, the chicken in the spaghetti sauce, instead of the beef he usually cooks… Or chicken in the sloppy joe’s instead of the beef… or just cooking on the grill on the few nice days we’ve had this winter!
His new focus also appeals to my competitive side. He’ll talk about the great racquetball game and leg workout he had today. Well, I can’t let him have a better workout than me! So it pushes me to push myself on the days when I don’t feel as focused.
I’m grateful for, not just the encouragement and competition, but also the camaraderie we share when we’re both sore from a tough workout and fighting the urge to eat everything in sight.
We’re getting healthier together. It’s another lifetime commitment we can make to each other for a long and healthy life!
Have you ever been alone in your fitness goals at your house? How did you push through?
