Don’t ride? Don’t get paid.
That’s just one of the facts of life as a professional bull rider. And they don’t call it the “Toughest Sport on Earth” for nothing. The guys on the Professional Bull Riders circuit put their bodies through 8 seconds of torture, as they get bucked in every direction by bulls that can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. So you have to make sure your body is ready to go to work. That’s the goal of PBR star Austin Meier.
He’s in Southern Colorado this weekend for the Pueblo Invitational in the annual Built Ford Tough Series at the State Fairgrounds in Pueblo. Austin stopped by the KKTV studios to chat with us during 11 News at 9am. And then he talked more with me about the ways he stays in shape to do such a dangerous job. Read on passed the picture.
Stacia: You said that you train more like a gymnast. I’m so surprised by that! I thought for sure you would train more like a football player!
Austin: I mix in a lot of training. I’ll do weight lifting, running, cross fit, and do some yoga. That way I get the muscle I want, but I can stay lean.
Stacia: Yoga? That’s just not how I pictured a bull-rider working out!
Austin: Not only does it help keep me flexible, but it really tones your muscles. It keeps you strong, but you don’t want to be big and heavy.
Stacia: What’s the most important part of your workout?
Austin: Our most important muscle group is our core. So I try to mix up core exercises. I do 1,000 crunches a day, scissor kicks, jack-knifes, hanging curls, twists and leg lifts.
Stacia: What about if you get injured? How does that change your workouts?
Austin: In the off season, we can be in the gym every day. But then you get back on tour, you’re up late bull-riding, you’re injured, tired from traveling – your body just shuts down. You can’t work out. So you give your body a rest and then hope you can work out the next week.
Stacia: How good is your eating? I think that would be hard on the road all the time!
Austin: Yeah, sometimes there’s not much open when we roll into town, we eat a lot of fast food. But I try to eat really healthy during the week when I’m hope. Then we just do the best we can on the road. But sometimes you’ve just gotta bite the bullet and enjoy that slice of pizza.
Stacia: So leading a healthier lifestyle really does help you to do your job.
Austin: It makes a big difference. Mentally – you’ve put in the work. But your body feels in condition to DO the work.

As a side note to this blog, I had a great time talking with Austin because he’s an Okie too! In fact we cheer for the same college team – Oklahoma State! He was also kind enough to let me try on all his gear after our interview. This stuff is heavy! A workout in itself just to wear it. But what an interesting life. Go Pokes!
