Embrace the S.U.C.K. - (Stacia Naquin)

No, it's not a very lady-like phrase. So in case my grandma reads this, I've devised an acronym for the definition behind a favorite quote from my coach at CrossFit SoCo:

 

 

There comes a time in every workout, where it REALLY starts to get hard. That's usually about the time you want to quit. And it's often written all over your face. That must have been the look on my face just as my first CrossFit SoCo workout had begun. And my coach, Adam, gave us all some advice that has stayed with me... "Embrace the suck." haha what?! I have to admit - it took a second to process. It's actually pretty terrific advice... if not very ladylike. (I can just imagine the look on my grandma's face at my repeating this phrase.) So, I thought I'd go into more detail of the true definition of this phrase. I think there are really four elements at play here, when it comes to my CrossFit workout (and other avenues of life)… and how to “Embrace the S.U.C.K.”
 
S.U.C.K.
Embrace the Sweat - if you didn't come to sweat, you didn't come to workout. You can't be afraid to have sweat dripping down your face and onto the floor. Sure - it's gross. But that's what it takes to take things to the next level with your workouts. That's what CrossFit is doing for me. And it's intense every day. I go there knowing I'll leave sweaty, smelly and disgusting. And you know what? I wear it as a badge of workout honor. I worked hard. So who cares if I look (and smell) like it?
 
S.U.C.K. 
Embrace the Unknown - it's easy to keep your same old routine when you hit the gym. But guess what? Your body is a master adaptor. So to keep from hitting a plateau, you have to keep changing things up. That means trying new elements to your workout that may be unfamiliar. That's what has been so interesting/frustrating about CrossFit. I'm like anybody - I want to do stuff I'm good at. But my body will get more out of new moves and new challenges.
 
S.U.C.K.
Embrace the Constant soreness - it's always tough when heading up to bed makes you wince with every stair (after squats)... or when a good joke makes you howl from pain, rather than laughter (yeah, that would be from the sit-ups). When you are challenging your body with something new every day, you have to expect you'll be sore. I'm not talking about pain like an injury, because there's a difference. I'm talking about the soreness that lets you know you did good and you’ll be even stronger for next time.

Embrace the Know-how - since everything you're doing is new... you have to take a minute to appreciate the skill and talent (yes, talent) it takes to have good form on all of these moves. No, you don't just reach over and grab a weighted bar. There's a process to making sure you don't hurt yourself as you challenge yourself. And it takes time to get that process to be second nature. So it's important to listen to the coaches and take their advice.
 
So there ya go. Embrace the S.U.C.K. … the Sweat, Unknown, Constant soreness and Know-how. THAT is how you “Embrace the suck.” At least, that’s MY interpretation of my coach’s advice. Any other thoughts?
