Aerial Workout - (Stacia Naquin)

This workout is unlike anything I've ever tried before. If you're tired of the treadmill grind... definitely put this on your to-try list:

 

I’ve been to a few Cirque du Soleil performances in my life. No matter which show you’re seeing, the musicality and sheer athleticism is impressive. It’s something I can definitely appreciate, but I’ve never thought about trying it! (OK – in my wildest dreams MAYBE)
 
But that’s exactly what I was in store for when I went to ReVibe Pilates & Bodywork. They have a new aerial workout. And the instructor? She used to be part of… you guessed it… Circue du Soleil. So this workout is definitely inspired by what you’ve seen in those shows!
 
So you can imagine my fear at first. Check out where the workout takes place. Pieces of silky material hanging from the ceiling! I’m thinking… ohhhhh boy, can I really do this? Keep scrolling down to see what it's like!
 
 
“While the silks may look intimidating, the beauty is that we start from the ground up,” says ReVibe owner, Trish Doyle-Stahl. “Really it is as challenging or less challenging as the client wants it. That's the beauty of the silks, everything can be modified to everyone's abilities.”
 
That made me feel a little bit better. I really didn’t think I was ready to go swinging upside-down across the room from the rafters, like a trapeze artist! But I was definitely intrigued as to what this workout would be like, especially when I met my instructor, Kristy.
 
 
You can definitely see her Cirque abilities. But Kristy has a very calming way about her as well. I hear her confidence in me in her voice! That was very reassuring, along with the fact that the workout started on the floor as we warmed up.
 
 

 
“People should expect a graceful full body workout with an emphasis on the upper body and core,” says Trish. “There is also an emphasis on stretch which is the foundation of aerial silks.”
 
I could feel the stretching part of the workout immediately. I even felt a little graceful as we moved off of the floor and started the true aerial part of the workout. Kristy takes it slow and makes sure you feel comfortable each step of the way. That way you’re just focused on the movements and the stretching!
 
Before I knew it, I was really pushing myself to reach and try to get the most out of every move. I’d like to say I even got a little brave with the movements I would try!
 
 
 
I couldn’t believe how strong I felt! And I definitely broke a sweat. The next day, I woke up feeling a bit sore. But it’s not the normal sore I’m used to. I was sore in a way that made me feel leaner – like my muscles had been elongated! That sounds about on target with the way Trish described it:
 
“You mainly feel the workout in the biceps, upper body, back and forearms,” she said. “In terms of stretch it just feels good everywhere and you really feel your joints have opened up. You don't feel so compressed.”
 
And there’s something else that’s different about this workout. It’s tough for sure. But not in that burpee-mountain-climber-sprint-like-your-life-depends-on-it kind of way. It’s tough in its own fluid, ballet-like way. And honestly… that might make it tougher.
 
“This workout is different from others in that it is graceful and a beautiful art form that is very empowering. It is like a combination of dance, power and anti- gravity movements,” says Trish. “It is fun, exciting, creative and an exhilarating way to build strength, flexibility, awareness and mind body connection.”
 
I couldn’t agree more with that statement. And if you keep at it, you might just work up to Kristy’s skills. But I’ve got to warn you – she’s pretty amazing! (As evidenced by the video attached!)
