Come join some 11 News staffers for a good spin on Saturday! We're trying to help 23 million Americans.

A Good Workout For A Good Cause

How are your legs?

Do you think you can ride a stationary bike for an hour?  I think you can.  Here's your chance.  Just go to Gold's Gym on Saturday and you can....give it a spin.  The gym at Union and Briargate Blvd. is hosting its annual spin-a-thon to raise money for the American Diabetes Association.

It's a chance to burn some calories and raise some money.  You just need at least 25 dollars worth of donations, and you don't need to be a member of Golds...but who knows, if you like it, maybe you'll join and start a program and change your life!  In the meantime you might at least change some other lives by rasing money for ADA. Here's a picture or two from the spin-a-thon last year...that's me on the right side of the first one.  Shannon Brinias was there last year...she'll be back this year too.

Weekend Anchor David Nancarrow will join us along with Morning Anchor Stacia Naquin and Executive Producer Mark Lammers.  I'm working on getting some others out there too.

Hundreds of thousands of patients rigth here in Colorado have diabetes.  Thousands more are diagnosed every year..and there is no cure.  There will never be a cure without events like this one to raise money for research.

Here are some facts and figures from the ADA's own website.  Take a minute to look at this.  The scope of this problem is staggering, and it's growing as it never has before.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Data from the 2007 National Diabetes Fact Sheet (the most recent year for which data is available)

Total: 23.6 million children and adults in the United States—7.8% of the population—have diabetes.

Diagnosed: 17.9 million people

Undiagnosed: 5.7 million people

Pre-diabetes: 57 million people

New Cases: 1.6 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in people aged 20 years and older each year.

Total prevalence of diabetes

Under 20 years of age

  • 186,300, or 0.22% of all people in this age group have diabetes
  • About one in every 400 to 600 children and adolescents has type 1 diabetes
  • 2 million adolescents (or 1 in 6 overweight adolescents) aged 12-19 have pre-diabetes

Age 20 years or older

  • 23.5 million, or 10.7% of all people in this age group have diabetes

Age 60 years or older

  • 12.2 million, or 23.1% of all people in this age group have diabetes

Men

  • 12.0 million, or 11.2% of all men aged 20 years or older have diabetes

Women

  • 11.5 million, or 10.2% of all women aged 20 years or older have diabetes

We can be a small part of the solution.    Get more information about the spin-a-thon here http://www.goldsgym.com/gyms/page.php?gymID=845&sec=18670&cid=10652. or you can just call Gold's at 548-8400.   If you're signing up because of this blog, drop me an e-mail and let me know, dward@kktv.com. so I can say hello on Saturday between 10 and 11 am.

I hope to see you Saturday...and when the hour is over, we can all ask again...

How are your legs?

We'll talk again soon.
