Don't completely slack off from your workouts when family comes to visit. Alter your exercise routine by focusing on all the walking you can do as you're showing them around.

Last week, we marked National Start Walking Day as a way to improve heart health.

I kept that in mind as the week went on when I had family in town. My sister came to visit from Oklahoma. Obviously I don’t want to waste time in the gym when I could be spending time hanging out with her while she’s here!

So, how do you still get in some calorie-burning time? Play tour guide! That’s what I did. It turns out – you can get in some good walking time, without even thinking about it. And you’ll burn calories as well.

Check this out:

On Thursday, my sister wanted to visit Manitou Springs and Old Colorado City. So we headed out there. In 3 hours, I burned 400 calories just walking around and shopping.

Then on Friday, we wanted to hit the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. If you’ve been out there, you know that’s a pretty tough walk with all those hills! (I mean, the zoo is on a mountain after all.) In just over 2 hours, I burned almost 500 calories checking out the new baby giraffes and marveling at the crazy grizzly bears – who were quite active by the way.

Saturday, we were ready for a sight-seeing break. So, we decided to do some shopping at the Shops at Briargate. We were there for an hour and I burned 160 calories.

See? Not bad at all. Was I sweating like I do at the gym? No, but it was still better than lying around and doing nothing. So take advantage of company coming to town. By playing tour guide, you can still burn some calories AND hang out with the fam at the same time.
