Are your household chores keeping you from the gym? No need to stress. You can turn your "to-do" list into quite the workout with these tips:

Ever have one of those days when you realize the laundry is piled to the ceiling, you need to go grocery shopping, straighten up the house, run more errands, go to the gym, fix dinner, AND get the guest bedrooms ready for company? Yeah, that was me last week and that was AFTER I got off work.

So what’s the first thing I lose on the list? Going to the gym.

I know I NEED to go to the gym. But you have to have prioroties. And with company coming, I made my house and chores the priority. After all - missing one workout isn’t that big of a deal, right? Little did I know, I would still get in a workout without ever leaving the house.

Is it the same thing as the workout you’ll do in the gym? No. But check this out:

When I do The Incline, if I take 2 hours to go up and back down, I can burn 700 calories. (That’s according to the Bodybugg that 24-Hour Fitness gave me to try out.) When I cleaned my house for two hours getting ready for company, I burned almost 400!

So maybe you’re not sweating like you do at the gym. But getting your housework done is still burning calories – and isn’t that what it’s all about?

Laura Schaelling a certified personal trainer with the YMCA has some tips to UP the calorie burn of some of those regular household chores.

Here’s what to do if you’re…

Unloading the dishwasher: “Raise up on your toes and hold for 3 seconds as you put the dishes in the cabinet,” said Shcaelling. “This will strengthen the calves.”

Cooking dinner: “Before you open that can of beans, use it as a weight and do a few triceps/bicep/shoulder exercise,” she said.

Washing the floor: “Wash the floor by hand,” advises Schaelling. “Use a ‘wax on/wax off’ motion.”

Laundry: “While separating laundry squat down to take each piece of clothing one at a time from one basket on the floor to the other basket up top or directly into the washer,” she says.  “Squat each time.”

Watching TV: “Work on your flexibility,” said Schaelling. “Stretch and hold each position for at least 20 seconds.”

So there you go. Now you don’t have to feel guilty about skipping out on the gym. You’re going to burn plenty of calories… AND your house will be clean.
