Sometimes it's hard to get to the gym. But there are ways to stay motivated - the best may be a partner in crime (or gym time).

Do you ever have one of those days when you just don’t want to go to the gym? That’s me everyday. I know I should go. I’m ALWAYS glad when I do (and the workout is over). But getting there can be tough.

So, as I shoot for a healthier 2010, I’m trying to find ways to get motivated and STAY motivated. I’ve always been fairly active. I’m familiar with the weight room. I’ve dabbled in running (did a half marathon 3 years ago). I even trained in kick-boxing in college. But my excitement for fitness comes and goes. I get lazy. And at the end of a long day at work, I just want to go home.

I know that if I’m not being held accountable for getting to the gym and eating right, it’s a rare occasion that I’ll go, much less choose good things to eat. Personal trainers are a great form of accountability! If you have an appointment set, you know you have to be there. But not everyone can afford a trainer, so the next best thing? A workout buddy! I’ve found one in my co-worker and pal Eric Lupher. Not only are we both writing the KKTV fitness blog, we’re also keeping each other accountable for getting to the gym and making healthier food choices.

Fitness experts say partnering up in your workouts is a great motivational tool! "By finding someone who shares your goals and is motivating you along the way, you will have the necessary support and accountability to encourage you to reach your goals," says Laura Schaelling, a Certified Personal Trainer with the YMCA in Colorado Springs.

It’s so true. Take yesterday for example – it was a CRAZY news day. My mind was fried. I was tired. But Eric and I had made plans to head to the gym after the noon show. So, we went. And once we got there and got moving, we got in a good workout!

Schaelling also says recent research shows dieters who had support from a partner lost more weight than those who didn’t! So there’s yet another perk. Eric and I have definitely been comparing and contrasting our meal choices and how they stack up with protein, carbs and fats. We’re also using our Bodybuggs to keep track of that, which offers even more accountability!

Losing weight isn’t my primary goal. But I do want to build muscle, have stronger bones and a healthier heart. I think, with a workout partner, I can more easily reach those goals.

Looks like I’m being held accountable again today. Normally I wouldn’t go to the gym after work on Friday. I’d go home. But my workout buddy, Eric, insists we get some cardio in before we start the weekend. I guess that’s what a workout buddy is for!
