Time To Climb (Don Ward)

Hiking to the top of Pikes Peak.

It's time to climb. This will be the 6th annual hike to the top of Pikes Peak for me and a group of friends.

It's not easy.  It's 13 miles with an elevation gain of nearly 8,000 feet.  By the time you get to the last mile or so, the air is very thin and the legs are very tired.

A couple of years ago we were all in great shape (by our standards!) and we all managed to finish between 5:15 to 5:18. Here's a picture of most of the group from that year just above treeline.  That's 11 News Chief Meteorologist Brian Bledsoe 2nd from right.

Last year several people had to cancel and it was just me and my friend Jeff who set off to make the climb. We had both let our fitness slip and it took us 6.5 hours.  Here we are finally at the summit.

This year we're back up to a group of 5 (including Brian and Meteorologist Branden Borremans) and everyone has been working out pretty hard.  I don't think we'll match 5:18 from two years ago.  I am confident we can do better than last year's slow, grueling climb.

I'll let you know how we do!
