Goal Accomplished!!!! - Stacia Naquin

I finally did my pull up!!! It was a New Year’s Resolution that took me ALL YEAR! But I did it.

My mom tells a story of how I quit sucking my thumb as a little kid. She says that one day I just walked up to her, handed her my blankie and said, “I don’t need this anymore.” And I never sucked my thumb again.

It’s seems like a pretty irrelevant accomplishment now that I’m a grown woman. But I’d like to think it showed some determination, even at 3-years-old.

Determination is definitely what it took to meet my grown-up goal this year of doing a pull-up!!!! And I did it! I did it! I did it!!! I trained all year long and finally, on a Friday in late November, I pulled my chin over that bar… set myself back down… and almost couldn’t believe it!!

I DID A PULL-UP!!!!!!!

And I hope you can tell (especially from all the exclamation points) how excited and proud I am.

I madea pull-up my goal and blogged about it on December 31st, 2012. Then, for even more accountability, talked about it on the morning show on New Year’s Day! I wanted everyone to know that I planned to make this happen.

But I definitely had some help along the way.

My trainer, Keith Banner, helped me learn SO MUCH!! In the pic above, we're goofing off on the 11 News set during an interview. But usually when we get together - we're working HARD! He showed me how to build the muscles that it takes to actually DO a pull-up. And he helped me celebrate the smaller accomplishments along the way.

As Keith says, “The short term goals are the ones that keep you driven and on track towards achieving your long term goals. The small victories keep you excited and enthusiastic and on your way to the big victory.”

He’s so right. One of my small victories came in the form of being able to do a chin-up… which is one step away from a pull-up! I’d never done a chin-up before either!! So, that was an exciting moment too. It helped me to really see that I was on track!

THEN I started to see how my body was changing and getting stronger. Check out my before and after!!

“Don't be surprised if you experience more benefits along the way from the smaller goals, allowing the attainment of the final goal to be all that much sweeter.”
And again – he’s so right. I was so proud to have built some real muscle!!
So, as we head into the start of another year – what will YOU resolve to accomplish? It’s time to start thinking about those 2014 goals. Whatever it is – you can do it!!
“If you want it bad enough, you can achieve it,” said Keith.
I think my goal will be to MAINTAIN my ability to do a pull-up. It would be easy to just do one and move on to another goal. But I’ve worked TOO HARD to let my muscles forget. And I have the added challenge of a big move! I’m headed to Phoenix for a new job at the start of the New Year. So, I think it’s a good goal to try to maintain my strength, with my new position in a new city. I know I can do it!!
Thank you for following along with this blog. And thank you for the opportunity to share my fitness goals here in Colorado Springs. No matter where 2014 takes you (and me), I hope it’s our fittest year yet!
