PETTY PERFECTION
I had a chance to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers a couple of weeks back at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield. What a great show! Two solid hours of solid hits with a couple of lesser-known gems thrown in.
My pictures aren't great but you get the idea.
Tom Petty is one of those artists with a song list that seems almost endless. I loved hearing a few non-hit such as "Spike". I really loved hearing the hits too. I've always liked Petty's music. I remember seeing the him on the Merv Griffin show in the late 70's with the video for "Refugee".
While I've liked him for decades I've never been an all out fan. I am now. What you forget about Petty is just how many great songs he's recorded. Every time he and the band launched into the next song it was an "aha" moment...."oh yeah, there's that one too.I almost forgot"
It takes decades of success to create that many songs we all know and like. By the time TP and the HB's launched into "American Girl" as the final encore song, we were all thrilled by what we'd just heard. What's more amazing is that we could still name 5 or 6 huge Petty hits that he didn't even have time to get to! Now that's a sign of a long and amazing music career.
I didn't write down the set list, but these days you can always find it on line. This is from April 12th, 2012.
