THE WALL ....IN THE FLESH
Roger Waters hits the stage in Denver tonight to perform the Pink Floyd classic "The Wall" in its entirety. What a great album that is, what a great show it will be! Here's a quick story about a connection to the 1979 album.
If you read the liner notes one of the singers credited with back-up vocals is Toni Tennille..as in Captain and Tennille, remember? I've been a huge fan of The Wall since it came out, and I always remembered her appearance as an interesting piece of trivia about one of my all-time favorite albums.
In the late 90's I was working as a Reporter and Weekend Morning Anchor in Cincinnati. Whenever various shows came to town I would often go interview the performers to put together entertainment segments on that weekend morning show. In 1999 Toni Tennille was starring in the national tour of a show called "Victor/Victoria"
I knew about her connection to "The Wall" so I took my copy of the CD insert along with me to the theater for the interview. After we talked about "Victor/Victoria" we chatted briefly about her career , including "The Wall." She was very gracious, said she gets asked about it all the time. For the record, she honestly didn't remember what she did for the record! I asked her if she was the voice of the groupie who says, "Are all these your guitars?" at the beginning of "One Of My Turns" She knew for certain that was not her..she gets asked that all the time too.
I told her I was a rock fan in high school wasn't a huge fan of Captain and Tennille hits like "Love Will Keep Us Together" or "Do That To Me One More Time". I did tell her that all those years later I could recognize how well written a pop hit like "Do That To Me One More Time" really was. "Thanks," She said, "I wrote that one."
I did NOT know that when I said it! I did mean it.
I asked her to sign "The Wall" for me and she was happy to. She invited me to the cast party for "Victor/Victoria" which was very nice of her, but I had to decline because I had to get up at 3am for work. I did see the show and she was terrific. Here's the CD.
There are some websites that claim the work done by Toni Tennille and some other singers never made it onto the final album. All I know is that her name made it onto the credits for the album...and her name made it on to my copy of the album....when she signed it for me in 1999!
We'll talk again soon.
