Another good show at the Fine Arts Center

"THE PRODUCERS" PRODUCES

The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center Theatre Company just launched its latest show this past weekend, and once again it’s a wonderful opportunity to see top-notch theatre right here.

“The Producers” is the story of two Broadway producers, one washed-up, the other a wannabe.  There’s everything here from storm troopers to showgirls, from pigeon-coop choreography to a Kafka joke. They decide that staging the worst show possible is the best way possible to make the most money possible. (They explain how that works in the show).

The play they pick and set to music is called “Springtime For Hitler” It’s hard to imagine that being anything other than a terrible show. In fact when they stage it it’s so bad it’s good, so mocking of the man in the title that it’s laugh-out-loud funny.

If you are easily offended you will be, well, easily offended.  Don’t take the kids to “The Producers”.  Mel Brooks material is funny, dirty, irreverent, over-the-top and hilarious.  The Broadway production of “The Producers” was nominated for a record 15 Tony Awards back in 2001.  It won 12 of them.  There’s the evidence that the material is good.

The only question then, is can this theatre company pull it off?  The only answer is yes.

Cory Moosman and Mark Lively are terrific as Max and Leo, the two producers. These are pretty demanding roles…and these two make the audience like them even as they scheme to steal.  Alannah Moore manages to mix silly and sexy in just the right amounts as Ulla. She was on 11 news at 4 last week, just before the show opened.

Brantley Scott Haines manages to mix silly and creepy in just the right amounts as the arian author of the tribute to the Third Reich. Sammy Gleason makes the audience laugh every time he’s on stage as Carmen Ghia.  Michael E. Gold is a Broadway veteran whose presence and experience are evident in his role as the show’s director.  He’s hired because he’s so awful.  He also steals the show within the show a little later. I won’t say too much, you’ve got to see this.  The ensemble players fill the stage and pull off  the clever choreography.  They sound great when they sing too.

As they say in “Springtime for Hitler” The Fuhrer is causing a furor….”The Producers” is a great night of live theatre without the drive to Denver.

Here’s a link for tickets. "The Producers" is at the Fine Arts Center weekends through February 20th.

I enjoyed it, I think you will too.

We’ll talk again soon.
