"Ragtime" (Don Ward)

Amazing show

"RAGTIME" RIGHT UP THE ROAD

It is brilliant.

The musical "Ragtime" made it's debut in Toronto in 1996, then moved on to Broadway.  It's based on the novel by E.L. Doctorow. You may have seen the non-musical movie version.

The musical is epic.  The story reminds us of words that sting and of hate that destroys and of hope that prevails.  I won't trace the plot here, google it if you need to, then go see this show.

"Ragtime" was revived on Broadway in 2009 and this production apparently resembles that one more than the original.

The music is incredible.  Most of it is in the style, ragtime, that became popular in the time the piece is set, the early 20th century.  The score often weaves the characteristics of ragtime music into other sorts of songs.  It is as American as a story can be. It is powerful as a stage piece.

It has not been a huge, long-running hit on Broadway.  I can't figure out why.  See it and you'll wonder too.

It's been a favorite of mine since I first saw it in the late 90's.  Now the Arvada Center Theatre Company's production of Ragtime has moved South to the brand new Lone Tree Arts Center, less than an hour from Colorado Springs.  Here's a link to the information.

If you've seen "Ragtime" before, maybe on a national tour, you might be like me.  I was worried that a regional production of such a complex and demanding piece would fall short.

There's no need to worry about this production now playing in Lone Tree.

It is brilliant.

We'll talk again soon.
