WATCH THE GOOD WIFE? GOOD CALL (PHONE) - DON WARD
I watched this week's episode of "The Good Wife" last night after the news. Since I work for a CBS affiliate I try to follow a lot of CBS shows and this is one of the best. It was another really entertaining episode, but something struck me as odd.
In just the first few minutes several characters used the word "phone" as a verb..several times each. Paraphrasing here, it was all along the lines of, "he phoned me, I've got to phone him back, phone me when you hear something." It must have happened a dozen times. It's perfectly legitimate, we all know exactly what it means..but who says that? What are the chances that four different characters would all make that word choice all at once?
Most of us would use the word "call" most of the time wouldn't we? "I'll call you back, she called me a few minutes ago, I've go to call you later."
"The Good Wife" is a great show. Julianna Margulies is wonderful in the title role, though it looks like there's a chance she may soon be the "not-quite-as-good wife" to her cheating politician husband. Where there's a Will...there may be a way out of a less-than-perfect marriage for Alicia Florrick! Anyway, it's a good mix of politically-influenced family issues and legal drama. I particularly like the latter. It's always an interesting case with a creative resolution. Great job writers!
The dialog is always sharp and clever without being so witty that it's no longer realistic. Great job again, writers! That's why phone didn't quite ring true. It seemed intentional to me....as though the writers and producers had a meeting and decided, "Ok, we're no longer using "call"...it's "phone" from now on!"
It felt like maybe it's an inside joke among the writers, maybe even the actors. It was out of character for these well-crafted characters...several of them said it again in the final few minutes of the show!
So producers of "The Good Wife" if you happen to have a google alert for the title of your show, and you happen to see this, what do you say? Is it an inside joke? a bet? a dare? a drinking game? ..or maybe nothing at all? Please call me.....er phone me - at KKTV in Colorado Springs, or email email@example.com.
This is not a criticism..just a question. Keep up the great work on "The Good Wife"
We'll talk again soon.
