A GREAT DAY FOR A GREAT CAUSE
Who knew that November 6th would bring us sunny and 70's at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo?
It's estimated that about 400 walkers signed up to "Step Out: To Fight Diabetes" It's the annual fund raising walk for the Southern Colorado branch of the American Diabetes Association. The weather was perfect and the setting, well, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is beautiful any time. I had the honor of serving as Emcee for the walk.
Early numbers show that the event raised more than $52,000 to help stop diabetes. That number may go up as totals are revised and more donations are collected. I'm particularly proud of our KKTV 11 News Team. Here we are in the picture below, minus a few walkers. We had people from the sales, promotions and news departments and I'm grateful to all of them for being part of this. My 11 New co-anchor Shannon Brinias (front row) was there again with her very cute daughter Emma-Marin...thanks ladies!
According to the early numbers, we were the top corporate team for money raised. We brought in $2,140. The top Friends/Family team was "Tammy Lobato-Our Family Angel" with 4,692 and the top Club/Organization Team was the CC Tigers with $1,306 raised. Those numbers may all change too. Every member of every team deserves a pat on the back for doing all they could. Thanks also to our friends at K-LITE 106.3. Captain Dan and Paul were there to host the pre-walk festivities. Here's a pic of me with the Captain himself.
I have 5 nieces and nephews and two of them were able to come along to the zoo with me. Here are Kate and Evan feeding the giraffes. This is something every child should do at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.
Here they are being good as gold off to the side while I'm talking to the crowd. Thanks to Lisa from our promotions department for taking this cool pic.
Weekend Anchor/reporter David Nancarrow and reporters Rick Montanez and Sarah Schwabe were part of the walk as well. Thanks!
So thanks Dave, Rick, Sarah, Steve, Lisa, Shannon and Emma -Marin, Brian, Anita, James, Christa, Sara, Andrea, Cyndi and Kate and Evan for being part of this. The ADA walks is my favorite charity event every year for reasons I've explained before here. http://www.kktv.com/blogs/blogwithdon/For_John_106412733.html
It's good to see so many hundreds step out to raise so many thousands. It's never enough though, it never will be until diabetes is gone. Please think about being part of this next year! It is a great day for a great cause...even if we can't guarantee temperatures in the 70's next time around!
We'll talk again soon.
