OUR OWN CHRISTMAS SPECIALS
We've got some special stuff lined up on KKTV 11 on Christmas Day!
Most of us will be up bright and early Christmas morning. In between the opening of the presents and the eating of the meal, maybe there's some TV time. If not, set up to record some of this for later!
We'll start at 11:30 in the morning with the 26th annual "Festival of Lights Parade" Here's a behind-the-scenes picture of me and Shannon Brinias and our blanket. We needed this to stay warm for the 3 hours we were out there. We did not show the blanket on TV......it looks a little silly...but you can see it here!
The parade was recorded on December 4th in downtown Colorado Springs. We record it live as it happens. It's sometimes a little unpredictable, it's never quite perfect, but it's always a good way to feel the Christmas atmosphere! Here are 11 News morning anchors Stacia Naquin and John Harding getting ready for their sideline reporting duties. With them are some of our amazing behind-the-camera folks. This was right before the parade, before it got dark...and cold!
The hour-long event was watched by as many as 80-thousand spectators who lined the downtown streets. I hope you can watch it on Christmas day!
At 12:30 we'll air an 11 News Special Edition, "On The Bright Side" I'm really excited about this. We do it every year and this year for the first time, it's a full hour long. So many great things happened in our area in the past year. In this program we take a look back at some of them. We've got soldiers coming home from the war and surprising their children. We've got good Samaritans who saved lives. We've even got the Colorado man who supervised the drilling to rescue the miners in Chile. Jeff Hart came to our studios to record an updated interview. It's exclusive to the "On the Bright Side" special. Here he is on the 11 News set.
He talks about having a son of his own and about the moment when the first miner came up. Remember how the miner's son was crying because he was so happy to see his father? Jeff told us he was thinking about his own son..and he was very moved by that moment. Weren't we all? Here's Jeff with his wife Dora and his son Dylan at 11 News.
From 1:30 to 2:30 we've got the "Air Force Academy Band: Spirit of the Season." I remember watching part of last years AFA special and it was terrific. I don;t know much about this year's but I can't imagine it being anything less than wonderful.
At 2:30 we'll air "Of Service and Valor". It's the Colorado Springs Police Department's Medal of Valor ceremony recorded back in September. It's not Christmas related but it's a good time to remember the men and women who wear the badge to protect all of us. Shannon and I were the Emcees for the ceremony and we host the on-air version.
What's remarkable about this is that we get to hear the stories of how these officers earned their department's top honors. We often get to hear the stories in their own words. Wait until you hear what some of them did. Here's a link to a piece I wrote right after the ceremony. http://www.kktv.com/blogs/blogwithdon/Amazing_Stories_From_Cops_On_The_Job_Don_Ward.html
So please watch these programs if you can. Watch them as they air or record them to watch later. Christmas and the days around it can be a little hectic, in a good way. Sometimes it's nice to relax and watch something uplifting. That's what these shows are!
We'll talk again soon
