Not Enough Buff Stuff, Tough (Don Ward)

Upstaged, but that's OK.

What a wild sports week we've had in Colorado!

I'm a CU guy. I've got season tickets and I go when I can. I took this shot in September.

I like to think I bleed Black and Gold...though lately a lot of us need a transfusion to keep that up.  We got that transfusion Monday morning.  CU formally announced that former player Jon Embree was coming back as head coach and that former player and Colorado legend Eric Bieniemy was coming with him as offensive coordinator.  WOW!  We'd all heard the unofficial word for about a day but now it was official.  Here's Bieniemy the Buff!

This is big news.  At times CU has been one of the more high profile programs in the recent times not so much, not even close. Embree talked on Monday morning about how the nation doesn't know what a great program this was and is...and he was out to spread the word.

Not on Monday!

By a little after 4 that same afternoon, sports directors across the state (including ours) had to change gears, change plans, change their rundowns for their sportscasts.   Cue the Broncos...with bigger news, MUCH BIGGER!

By a little after 4pm we all knew that Josh McDaniels was out, fired, terminated, sacked like Elvis Dumervil had caught him from behind and brought him down.  Nothing trumps a big Broncos story when it comes to Colorado sports news..heck, Colorado ANY news.  I'm a Broncos guy too.

I made it to a couple of games this year (including that humiliating loss to the Raiders)  As Broncos fans we all wanted something to change and now we knew it would.  As Buffs fans, well, same story.  It would have been cool if the Buffs big deal could have had at least a 24 hour cycle to play itself out..instead of 5 or 6 hours!  As Broncos fans though, we know who wins that battle. Now let's hope both teams can win lots of battles in the years ahead.

11 News Sports Director Jesse Kurtz told me as soon as the Broncos breaking news broke..the Buffs story was a distant second.  Some sportscasters wouldn't even mention it that evening. Jesse did run about a 20 second soundbite with Embree that night..but it was (almost) all Broncos.

John Embree and Eric Bieniemy will have plenty more opportunities to get their message out.  Hopefully they'll start soon with recruits!  Bieniembree (I just made that up) could work well for CU.  Let's hope the Broncos find a possible solution too.

We'll talk again soon.
