STAYING WITH FRIENDS
I'm lucky when I come to England. Since I lived here for a few years as a child I still have friends here. They are kind enough to let me and various other family member stay with them when we come over here. We all do the same when any of them want to visit the U.S. Below are Sandra and Peter Wilkins. They've been family friends since I was a child and they were...very, very, very young adults!
The best part of staying with friends is being able to do things that aren't just the popular tourist activities. I'm staying in a small village called Radway in the Warwickshire countryside. It's a wonderful place with lots of beautiful old houses, surrounded by rolling hills and fields. Here's a view of the village from the top of Edge Hill (the site of the Battle of Edge Hill - the first big battle of the English Civil War in October of 1642)
You can see the church spire and one of the magnificent old homes...and no that's not the one where I'm staying! We spend a lot of time walking in the countryside and it is spectacular. Most tourists don't make it to a place like this.
I still do like to go to some of the tourist spots though. Below is Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon. It's the town where Shakespeare was born in 1564.
He was buried in the church..here's his grave, including the curse he placed on anyone who dared to move his bones.
Much more to see and do.
We'll talk again soon.
