NOT THE BEST BIRTHDAY REACTION
My younger sister Jen was born on this day...40 years ago. I was five years old on March 9th, 1971. I already had one sister. Cindy is a just over a year older than me...and she had no interest whatsoever in playing baseball with me.
That's why I wanted the new baby to be a little brother...who one day would be able to play baseball with me.
Word came in, it's a girl. The whole family was thrilled, I was infuriated! How could my parents have a girl, how could this baby not be the baby brother I wanted?
This is the funny part. I climbed up onto to a high dresser in my parents room and vowed not to come down until this baby girl was 16! ( I don't know why I picked 16 - I was 5!). At that point my announced plan was to do some sort of physical harm to this sister who dared not to be a baseball-playing brother.
I got over it after what seemed like a long time but was probably about 10 minutes - I was 5.
Now, 40 years later Jen is a great wife and mother and a teacher, even a talented singer and actress.
She's also a great little sister - even if we never did play baseball. Happy Birthday!
We'll talk again soon.
