MARSALIS ON THE ARTS ON 60 MINUTES
Wynton Marsalis is a trumpet virtuoso.
At the age of 49 he's a legend in Jazz and Classical circles. He was profiled Sunday on 60 Minutes and it was a really strong piece. It was wonderful to hear short clips of him performing with the "Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra" which he leads. It would have been even better to hear longer clips..but there is a time limit! (60 Minutes)

As intriguing as hearing him play is hearing him talk. He mentioned at one point that names such as Charlie Parker and even Duke Ellington don't register at all with many young people and even many people his age. What he said next....well, I had to rewind the DVR a few times to write it down.
"The Arts are our collective human heritage. You're a better person if you know what Shakespeare was talking about, if you know what Beethoven struggled with, if you know about Matisse. If you know what Louis Armstrong was actually saying through his horn, you're better, because it's just like you get to speak with the wisest people who ever lived."
What he said!
We'll talk again soon.
