The Drive To Drive Other Drivers Crazy (Don Ward)

Some do some things that drive the rest of us crazy...

I know I'm going to sound like a whiner...or maybe like an overly impatient driver, and maybe I am..but people - come on!

With tongue-in-cheek here are my simple requests for some other drivers..

There seems to a be a subset of drivers who want to control what the rest of us do.  They know who they are..and they know what they're doing!  I just can't figure out why they're doing it.  If the speed limit is 65, they feel compelled to drive in the left lane at about 60.  It's like they're some self-appointed prefect, some grown-up version of a hall monitor making sure the rest of us do what they think is safe.  If you need to drive under the limit, as is your right, please do it in the other lane.  We have laws to tell us how fast we can go, and police to enforce those laws. Drivers who go over the limit are routinely stopped and punished for doing so...and that's the system upon which we've agreed as a society. So please keep the safety procedures at home, or at least out of the left lane.

Speaking of police on the roadways or highways...if you see one, sure slow down, get under the limit if you happen to be over it.  Some drivers though feel the need to slow way, way down, to way, way under the limit. It's almost like they want the officer to see them, as if they want to say, "Look officer! See how good I'm being!"

The officer is busy giving someone else a ticket.  He doesn't care how good you're being, and you don't get extra credit later for going extra slow now!

Finally...the first-in-line factor.  If we're all stopped at a light and you're at the front of the line..we're all counting on you.  It's kind of like being in the emergency exit row on a plane.  Our chances of making that left turn on the first green arrow are in your hands.  You owe it to your fellow drivers to live up to that responsibility and look up at that light, unblinking, so that as soon as it turns, you turn.  If your head is up.......on your shoulders, right where it belongs, but you're looking away, we all lose valuable seconds.  3, 4, 5 wasted seconds could mean some of us won't get through.

Sure you will, you can waste all the time you want and squeak through right at the end, but look what you've done to the rest of us.  Is that so much to ask?  As Cheech Marin said in one of the Cheech and Chong movies, "Responsibility is a heavy duty responsibility."  Please take the first-in-line-factor seriously.

Happy driving!

We'll talk again soon.
