THIS IS NOW ABOUT THE COOLEST THING I OWN
I started this blog, "The Written Ward" one year ago this weekend. Since then some nice things have happened. I blog about a little bit of everything, no real rules. After 152 entries there have been comments from all over the world. Nothing touches the excitement of what happened after I wrote a piece about a very popular song..."Stomp Stomp Clap!"
This all started on a Sunday afternoon in November. I had a press release about the song "We Will Rock You" by the British band Queen. It had been named the most played song at American sporting events for the previous year. That's no huge surprise to anyone who's ever been to an American sporting event. Millions of us have, so I thought that would be an interesting topic for a blog post. I also happen to be a big fan of that particular band..they've been my favorite since I was a 10-year-old living in England.
I decided to make the blog a little bigger, and I came up with 11 facts (because we're 11 News) about the song "We Will Rock You". I hammered out the piece in about 40 minutes. and put it up at kktv.com. Here's a link to the original. http://www.kktv.com/blogs/blogwithdon/78098852.html
Later that night, the man who wrote the song, Queen guitarist Brian May, saw my blog, liked it and even had his people post it to his website. http://brianmay.com/ I then wrote to thank him for doing so, and Dr. May himself (one of my longtime heroes) e-mailed back to thank me for writing it! Wow...Here's the blog I wrote after all that happened. http://www.kktv.com/blogs/blogwithdon/78257912.html
There's more. A woman named Jacky Smith runs the International Fan Club for Queen. She contacted me to say she liked the piece and would like to publish it in the club's quarterly magazine. I said, "Sure, I'd be honored.!"
Sure enough a few weeks later she sent me the magazine, and there was the article I wrote, nicely laid out with lots of pictures from the 1977 video shoot for "We Will Rock You". I was very pleased with that!
There's more. I decided to push my luck. I contacted Jacky Smith in London to see if there was any way she could get the two active members of Queen, Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, to sign a copy of my article in their magazine. She wrote back that she had to get the guys to sign some other things and she'd be happy to get them to sign for me! Wow.
So, in the mail past week I got the magazine, signed by two of my favorite musicians ever. Plus, Jacky told me that while she waited for him to sign it, Roger Taylor read the whole thing, and liked it! So now both of these major rock legends had read (and signed) what I wrote about one of their most famous pieces of music. Again, Wow! Take a look. Roger wrote "cool article"!

Here's Brian May's signature.
They both mentioned my name, then signed theirs...and that Rocks Me! It's one thing to have autographs..I have some others from Queen, including their late front man Freddie Mercury. What's special about this is that I wrote something about them and they signed it, more importantly, they liked it. Writing is part of my job. It's one facet of the career I chose and have built for 21 years. Like most of us, my job is a pretty big part of my life. So is music. So this unique piece of memorabilia crosses into a few important pieces of territory for me!
Thanks Brian and Roger for giving me the coolest thing I own!..and for giving millions of us decades of entertainment.
We'll talk again soon.
