NOT QUITE COMPUTER SAVVY
I had a very nice lunch Thursday with my mother Ruth and my stepfather Leo, and with Carl and Betty, good family friends from a long time ago. These are all wonderful people, all in their 70s (Leo's in his 80s) and I had a great time spending time with them. So what follows is not intended to be mean-spirited..just kind of funny. It made me laugh.
Below, Mom and Leo, Carl and Betty.
Towards the end of lunch Carl and Betty mentioned that they needed the phone number for a business in Colorado Springs. I had the number, but not with me. Here's the conversation between me and the four of them that followed.
Me: "Why don't you just go on line and get it...."
Me: "Google it. Anybody know how to use google?"
One of them: "Is that like twitter?"
(General laughter from all four of them as they confirmed their collective position - the "oh-those-computer-web-things-are-all-the-same" stance.)
(silence from me)
Let's see..in how many ways is google NOTHING like twitter? I guess it is kind of like twitter ...in that they're both websites!
I found the number on my phone, with google, not twitter, and they wrote it down. We finished our lunch and continued to have a really nice time!
Leo paid the bill and no one got out a slide rule to figure out the tip.
So we all have to be patient with our elders and realize that what we take for granted isn't always so simple to them. They have all figured out how to use e-mail, so that's a start. Plus, my Mother has figured out how to....find ..this ..blog...and .read...it....sorry Mom.
We'll talk again soon.
