THE OLD JOKE, "I'VE GOT SOCKS OLDER THAN YOU!"
Have you heard anyone use that line about someone considerably younger? Sometimes in the TV business (or any business I suppose) we work with people who are many years our junior, many, many years.....
This isn't a story about socks...it's about a shirt. We all may have some souvenir shirt from a concert or some other event that we've saved over the years. I have a couple of "intramural (insert sport here) champion" shirts from the old fraternity days at CU that are still around somewhere. I don't ever wear any of them though.
This weekend, on Saturday, I wore this blue shirt. Not for any particular reason. It's comfortable. When the weather is warm enough it's in the regular rotation of shirts I pull out of the closet.
Also this weekend I happened to be looking at some old photos. I was talking to some school kids in the the one below. The blackboard in the background says it was Tuesday, May 30th. I remember this scene. I was talking to kids in O'Fallon, Illinois, where I went to grade school for a few years. I was in the classroom of my old 2nd grade teacher. This was just as I was finishing up the course at a broadcasting school in St. Louis....so I know this picture was taken in 1989....1989!
Yes...it's the same shirt. That blue shirt has been in the regular rotation for 21 years! That's a year shy of half my life! I had no idea until I thought about it. It's in the laundry now, I might wear it next week! And I really do work with a few people to whom I can say...I've got a shirt older than you! No socks though.
We'll talk again soon.
