THE CHANGING FACE OF HUNGER
More and more families in Southern Colorado need help just to put food on the table.
Take a look at the largest freezer in El Paso County. It's at the fairly new Care and Share Warehouse complex off Constitution near Powers in Colorado Springs.
It's got 9,000 square feet of floor space. That's as much as three pretty big houses. It's also a few stories tall. Care and Share needs all that space because Southern Colorado needs all that food. Here's why. In fiscal year 2008, Care and Share distributed 11 million pounds of food through about 400 agencies in dozens of Southern Colorado counties. That's a staggering amount of food...but it gets worse. By fiscal year 2009 it was 14.6 million pounds of food. For the year ending June first the distribution total will be 18 million pounds of food!
Shannon Brinias and I talked about that need a little bit in the Public Service Announcement we just shot at the vast Care and Share warehouse complex.
Beginning June 1st KKTV 11 News is proud to work with Care and Share for the "Campaign To End Summer Hunger." Food banks in general get a lot of donations around the various holidays, but as Shannon says in the PSA, hunger doesn't take a summer vacation. This drive is crucial. We'll be bringing you more information on how to help soon, and the spot we just shot will start screening soon at Cinemark Theaters, before movies. Please look for it and listen to it.
I got a quick tour of Care and Share before we started and I am very impressed by the work they do and the help they give. I was also impressed by the staff and the volunteers who give their time to this crucial program.
It's important to note that a full 40% of those who get help from Care and Share have at least one working adult in the home, many have two. These are not freeloaders milking the system for free stuff. So that 9,000 square foot "cold case" will be filled up and emptied out over and over again to feed families in need, and there are so many more than before. If you know someone who needs help, they can call the United Way at 211.
There's a pretty good chance that you and I will have all the food we need tonight. There's a 100% chance that thousands of Southern Colorado children will go to bed hungry tonight....children. That's not good enough. So look for this campaign starting in just a couple of weeks and help if you can. There's more information here. http://careandshare.org/
We'll talk again soon.
