Backyard Mystery....Solved (Don Ward)

Who's been stealing my stuffing?

Most of us have a table and chairs on the back patio or deck.  I'll have to admit that my set isn't in the best of shape.  The table is ok..but the chairs, or the chair cushions have seen better days.  Three of the four were getting a little worn and torn, one was ok.  Then one of the torn ones got really bad, really quickly.  Some of the stuffing was coming out in what appeared to be fistfulls!

Turns out it was mouthfulls.  I finally caught the sneaky stuffing stealer over the weekend.  Take a look.

Turns out this little guy has been helping himself to the guts of my deck furniture.  I think he's been carrying clumps of it away to build a nest somewhere.  My neighborhood is only about 10 years old, so there aren't too many trees from which the local squirrels, scarce though they may be, can choose for a home.  Nor are there too many tree remnants on the ground to pick up as building material.

Somewhere in a tree near my yard there is a squirrel's nest, or drey as they're apparently called sometimes...made entirely of white cushion-stuffing.  I haven't spotted it yet.   Turns out this tricky little tree-dweller may actually be spending more time on my deck than me.  Look at this, he seems to have created a burrow of sorts inside the remaining stuffing that he hasn't yet taken away.  There seems to be one where his is in the top of the chair-back, and another one below on the seat of the seat.

I was going to replace the chairs this summer it'll have to happen soon, I'm on a squirrel schedule. I wish this bushy-tailed tree-rat nothing but good health...but I don't want to see him on my deck any more...Oh yeah, now I've got his attention.

See!   Anyway, the new chairs will have to be the kind without stuffing.  Sorry squirrels.

We'll talk again soon.
