KIDS WANTED TO KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO DO THE NEWS
My good friend Ros Locke teaches kids...7 year olds...at Middleton Cheney Primary School.......in England. Ros is married to my old friend Darrell whom I met at a different primary school in England when we were both 10. That's Ros (Mrs. Locke) on the left below.
I talk to school kids all the time. Usually they know about and are somewhat interested in KKTV 11 News because they live in Southern Colorado. The kids in Middleton Cheney obviously don't. It just so happens though, that they are learning about geography and populations and life in other areas. Based on that, Ros asked me if I'd come in for a while to talk about life here, and I was happy to do it. The kids all live in Middleton Cheney in the English Midlands, or in other villages nearby..so I had a few things going for me in terms of their interest.
First of all, I'm American so that's a novelty. Secondly, I live in a pretty big city now, Colorado Springs, and I used to live in a much bigger city, Denver, a contrast from their lives in what is considered the English Countryside. Thirdly....well, that whole TV thing.
I brought along lots of pictures of life in Colorado, and in Colorado Springs and Denver. The kids were interested, and they asked several relevant questions about American life in an American city. Their main interest however, seemed to be that I was on the telly. Ros had explained my job to them well before my arrival, and I'm afraid in the minds of the youngsters my status may have grown and stretched well beyond what my job would deserve! I did bring some pictures of the 11 News team on the news set to show them what that looks like.
They were very polite and enthusiastic and they had LOTS of questions about being on TV. I answered most as best I could...The questions from curious 7-year-olds ranged from, "Do you like doing the news?" to "Are you rich?", "What's your favorite color?" and "Do you have any pets?"
The answers by the way...yes, no, blue and only some fish.
Ros kept the pictures and set about putting up a big classroom display about life in Colorado...and about KKTV! I'll have to let Shannon, Brian and Jesse know that their picture is now pinned to a wall.....in Middleton Cheney....in the Midlands of England!
We all got together for a group photo outside the school after our time together. Thanks kids!
We'll talk again soon.
