WHO DOES YOUR HAIR? APPARENTLY NO ONE
I didn't like the style at first..but it um.....grew on me.
On a different and non-hair-related blog entry recently an 11 News viewer named Al left the following inquisitive comment:
"Why does Don Ward never appears to have comb his hair?"
The answer Al, is that Don Ward never has comb(ed) his hair. At least not for several years. Here's the back story on the back and sides.
I used to have regular hair, parted on the side in a more traditional way. About 6 or 7 years ago I was working at KWGN-TV in Denver, known then as WB-2. Managers there had an image consultant named Patti come in to...well...image consult..with all the on-air people. Patti told me my hair had to go. Not all of it. I'm lucky that I haven't lost much yet. My hair style had to go ......to be replaced with something to which the word style could actually be applied.
She took me to a stylist. The two of them then consulted and styled, then styled and consulted, without really ever consulting me. ( I was instructed/required to do whatever the image people told me to do...and I was ok with that) The end result was the haircut/hair style I still wear. They had me do one other thing which I will NEVER do again. Maybe I'll write about that next week.
Anyway...Al, it's the style. It's disheveled by design, strategically scruffy, masterfully mussed. Honestly all I do is get it cut this way every few weeks by Megan at A Total New You. Day to day all I have to do is put some stuff in it - I believe the consultants' catch-all term is "product" - then mess it up a little and I'm good to go. I really don't comb it Al. Maybe it got a little too messy, I got it cut a bit shorter today. Al, what do you think?
I didn't like the style for quite a while. Patti insisted it was great. My bosses at Channel 2 liked it. So did my friends and most of my family..though I think my father still secretly hates it. (I think he's still disgusted by those scruffy looking Beatles he saw on the Ed Sullivan Show). A good friend in London watched a webcast at kktv.com. She hadn't seen me in many years and she let me know that she saw me...and my hair. So it did make an impression.
The question rising in that space right under your hair right now might be a resounding, "Who Cares?"
I really don't care all that much but let me tell you what happened when I first got the Anchor job here at 11 News. One of the things the guy from the paper asked me in the "here's the new guy" interview was...."What do you use on your hair?" I had to go look at the jar/container, whatever it is to tell him...American Crew, Fiber. Now who cares?
Anyway Al, that's a long answer to a simple question. I'll keep a closer eye on it to make sure the contrived chaos of a coif I now sport doesn't get too out of control. Thanks for watching 11 News and thanks for reading the blog and commenting.
Hair's to you!
