Murder Set To Music (Don Ward)

A dark story, a complicated score, a talented cast. This should be good.

The Demon Barber Comes To Colorado Springs

The stage is set...

The stage is so big that the orchestra pit is covered and a few rows of seats were removed. The set is so complex that it took the actors some time to learn to navigate their way around all the stairs and platforms.  The score is so intricate that experienced singers call it the most challenging thing they've done.

The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center's production of "Sweeney Todd" is about to open.  It could be about as spectacular a production as the FAC stage has ever seen.  The Stephen Sondheim musical won 8 Tony Awards when it debuted on Broadway, including best musical and best score, so the material is good.  The cast is too.

In the title role is Alan Osburn.  He told me today that in the 90's he "covered" the role of Javert in "Les Miserables" on Broadway.  That means he played Javert about once a week.  If you know that show, and you know that role, you know anyone who's played it is good.

Full disclosure here, my younger sister Jen Lennon is in the chorus for "Sweeney Todd"  She's classically trained with a lot of stage experience and a theatre degree from Northwestern.  She knows a good cast...and she told me this is a good cast.

Check out the video link for an interview from 11 News at 4 with stars Alan Osburn and Eryn Carmen.  I'll see the show this weekend and blog again about how it was.

The story set in 19th century London is about a man wronged who seeks and gets his violent revenge.  Parts of his victims wind up in meat pies made by the woman whose shop is below his barber shop.   This one's not for the kids..they don't recommend that anyone under 17 should see it. I'm recommending that everyone over 17 should see it.

Here's a link for tickets and information.

We'll talk again soon.
