The (Tread) Miller's Tale

This tale involves no one shouting, "A beard! a beard!"

Anyone?  Chaucer?  Too Middle-Ages?

Anyway I am a treadmiller, a regular on the machine that works us so hard, running for hours and getting nowhere.  When it comes to fitness it really works.  I've found one way to keep up the good work is to listen to the right music.  I've written before that it's usually something pretty heavy.  Sometimes though, it's something not quite as heavy but every bit as good.

A few days ago I pulled up "Abbey Road" on the i-pod and discovered something interesting.  The song "Oh Darling" is a great song in general, and a great song for running. Its tempo exactly matches my exhausted foot-stomps at a pace of 6.5 mph ( I know, not that fast but we all do what we can) The song is in 6/8 time so in your head you have to count the steps 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 to fall into the rhythm. Listen to the hi-hat cymbal, every time you hear it that's a step.   Try's cool. 

The next song is "Octopus's Garden"...not one of my favorites..but remarkably, it ALSO matches up with my same stride.  It's written in 4/4 time so you have to count the steps at a quick 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4...but it works. 

Tomorrow I'll probably go back to Green Day or My Chemical Romance in the old i-pod.

Anything to keep keep us going is a good thing as we run into our mid-40's, late 40's? 50's? Late 50's?
