OH, THAT DON WARD
First of all I take my job very seriously. I don't take myself very seriously. I learned long ago that I'm not a big deal. I'm always flattered when someone realizes who I am, and I'm never offended when someone doesn't.
I had a guy named Bob come to the house this afternoon to get an estimate on re-covering some dining room chairs. That's his business, I didn't tell him mine because it didn't matter. I picked the material from his sample book and he quoted me what seemed to be a reasonable price. I don't know anything re-covering chairs and he seemed to know his business pretty well. I agreed to have him do the job.
During the course of our conversation Bob had confirmed that my first name was Don and not Dan or Dave. As we were wrapping up he got confirmation on the spelling of my last name, Ward, W-A-R-D. So he knew my first name was Don and my last name was Ward but he hadn't really put things together yet.
As Bob was getting ready to leave he asked, "So how long have you been in Colorado Springs because you look really familiar?"
I have conversations that go just like this one quite often, so I told him I went to Doherty High School many years ago. Bob replied, "I went to Wasson, so that's not it."
I said to Bob, "Do you ever watch the news?" Usually that does the trick but Bob still looked a little puzzled so I added, "I work at KKTV."
Then in a moment I witness every once in a while, the light bulb lit up, the eyes got wide and Bob said, "Oh, you mean you're ON the news, you're Don Ward!"
Bob had known for quite a while that my name is Don Ward..but right in that moment he realized I'm Don Ward. It's always funny and flattering when that happens. He shook my hand one more time and backed out the door as we both laughed about it.
"I'll see you tonight!" he said. I hope so. I hope we've locked in another loyal 11 News viewer now.
I won't see Bob tonight, but I'll see him next week.
That's when the chairs will be done.
We'll talk again soon.
Don Ward....THAT Don Ward
