I'VE GOT THE NEWSBLUES BLUES
Once again, you never know who's going to see your blog. A month ago it was a world famous rock star who put my work on his site.
This time it's a website that's very popular with TV types. A couple of TV friends told me today that my piece was on the site http://www.newsblues.com/ .
I wrote a blog entry a couple of days ago called,"Do Anchors Wear Pants?" It was kind of silly. Then again, it really is a question I've been asked many times. For that reason I thought I'd answer it. Others inside the business have since told me they've been asked, and others outside the business have told me they've wondered about it. Clearly it's all pretty tongue-in-cheek.
I now take you back to the key point of that blog..."So my answer to the question isn't really a matter of pants or no pants, (let's put the presence of some pants down as a given) but rather which pants. There really is a semi-interesting answer to that."
I went on to explain that we used to be able to get away with coat and tie on top, and jeans on the bottom. I even dubbed it "top-dressing" I explained that news Anchors are now in more full-length camera shots, so no more casual pants.
Today newsblues.com picked up the blog and posted it part of it, even quoted it at the top of the home page. Thanks News Blues. I will take this treatment in the spirit of fun. I think it was intended that way.
One of the headlines on the homepage reads, "Colorado news anchor now wearing pants."
If you click on the headline you get to an article with the following lead paragraph.
Don Ward, Primary anchor at Gray Television's KKTV-11-CBS in Colorado Springs (Market #92), Whose favorite movie is "This Is Spinal Tap", reveals that, until a few years ago, he didn't wear pants while anchoring.
Then the site quotes some, but not all of my blog entry..again, all in good fun.
It all changed 7 or 8 years ago. That's when TV stations started moving Anchors around. They started having us get out from behind the desk to deliver some of the stories. We stand in front of large TV screens, or the chroma-key weather wall, or near maps or next to the sports guy to chat. I like all of that, I think it makes the newscast more interesting. It also makes the Anchor more visible...the entire Anchor...top half and bottom half, pants and all.
With that change of policy came a change of clothes, no more jeans or khakis with suit coats or sport coats. Sometimes reporters still do it if there's a chance they might be on a potentially dirty story..weather often qualifies for that. Anchors though, we now wear the suit, the whole suit and nothing but the suit.
I do apreciate the mention, but it's not quite all true. My favorite movie, as listed on my kktv.com bio is "This is Spinal Tap, " but I revealed only that I didn't always wear the pants that match the suit. I guess you could say :
President of the United States - now wearing pants
Stars of "This Is Spinal Tap" - now wearing pants
Editor of of News Blues- now wearing pants.
My point is that none of us, including me, wait.....especially me, was ever NOT wearing any pants.
They do seem to like the term "Top Dressing". Maybe that will catch on.
I hope this turbulence over trousers doesn't hurt my chances of Anchoring the network news, or running for President.
(I don't think I had much of a chance of doing either of those).
We'll talk again soon.
