What I've learned about writing "The Written Ward."

"The Written Ward" - A Blog Year In Review

The first blog entry of 2010 is a recap of all the blog entries of 2009.

I started this blog in May 29th, 2009 after several years of being asked to do so by the bosses here at 11 News.  I write about just about anything. I don't take sides on major issues because there are plenty of other places to get way more of that than any of us need.  I still don't feel comfortable writing in the first person.  It's just not what we do in TV.

I've written several blog entries about soccer and not one of them was among the most viewed.  I guess I'll slow down on that.  I often do a list of 11, because I work for 11 News.  Many years ago I worked in Louisville, Kentucky at channel 32. This blog would be a lot more work there!

There were 87 entries in 2009.  I should do more entries and keep them shorter.  I will also try to do more about the inner workings of a TV newsroom. That's one of my missions.  I've done a few behind-the-scenes pieces and I'll work on doing more.

Put a famous person in a blog, and more people will read it.  People have alerts set up to let them know about any web content which includes the famous names, or they tend to search their favorite celebrities.  That sometimes takes them to my little blog, "The Written Ward"   I don't do that on purpose to get more hits, but if an entry happens to be about someone well-known, it happens.  I've had comments come in from South Africa, Wales, England and all over the United States.  That helps explain the top part of the following list. These are the top 11 (because we're 11 News) most viewed entries from "The Written Ward"

By the way, hundreds and hundreds of readers can look at an entry and not leave a comment.  The most-viewed entry below had nearly 700 hits and only 3 comments, and one of them was me responding to the other two!   The most commented entry by far was "It's Almost Over, So What's It Called" http://www.kktv.com/blogs/blogwithdon/79765717.html  with 18.  So please leave a comment if you like what you read, and please pass it on to others!

8) It's Almost Over, So What's It Called?

9) A Cheesy Tattoo

10) Christmas Music

11) The Dish On The Dish

The most popular aren't necessarily my favorites. The ones like the best and would like more people to read are well..sure, "Stomp Stomp Clap", since that's the one that allowed me to get a couple of e-mails from my favorite rock guitar hero.  http://www.kktv.com/blogs/blogwithdon/78098852.html

I also really like "11 Things About Getting Older".  It's a tongue-in-cheek assessment of adding one more year to the count.  http://www.kktv.com/blogs/blogwithdon/51522902.html

Next would be "Make The Most Of Every Day" It's about a good friend who died. It meant a lot to me to write it and several friends told me it meant a lot to them to read it.  http://www.kktv.com/blogs/blogwithdon/68696692.html

My favorite though is one of the shortest.."A Lesson From A Little One." http://www.kktv.com/blogs/blogwithdon/49116862.html  It's a true story about how a little boy made the grownups proud one day.

This is blog entry number one for 2010.  I'm going to try to hit 150 for the year...149 to go!

We'll talk again soon.
