It's Almost Over..So What's It Called (Don Ward)

We need something catchy to call this decade.

A DECADE WITH NO NAME

What do we call the first decade of the 21st century?  Surely not "The First Decade of the 21st Century."

We all know the Roaring 20's, The Fabulous 50's, the Swinging 70's...so now we're.... in ....the .....blanking what-ies?

I've been thinking about this for a while.  As time passes we'll want to be able to refer back to the years 2000 - 2009 as something...forget the i-n-g verb we often love to put before the numeric name....we don't even have the numeric name.

A little on-line research reveals that this has been a problem before.  Shortly after the first decade of the 19-Hundreds no one had a good name for that either..they apparently tried the "Aughts"  as in "he was born in aught-5"  It never caught on.  However, it is listed now in urbandictionary.com as a slang term for this decade, so it may be catching on with the kids this time around.

Today if we say "turn-of-the-century" everyone generally assumes we're talking about 1900 and the years right before it and right after it.  When will "turn-of-the-century" start meaning the year 2000?  Will we then have to start saying,"turn-of-the-19th-century-into-the-20th-century"?  That's catchy.

There's always simply "The Two-Thousands".  It just feels clunky, plus will apply to the entire century and won't specifically indicate THIS decade.  We can do better can't we?  Maybe we could come up with a cool name on a reality TV show, and we could all vote on it with our cell phones or i-phones....how "Two-Thousands" is that!

The British sometimes call these past ten years, the "nought-ies" as in nought or naught for the more American spelling,  meaning zero.  It's clever, but it sounds a bit, well, naughty.  I Suppose that's the intent.  The idea was apparently proposed by the BBC on January 1st, of 2000.  I don't think it's sticking.

Some say the Double-Oh's or the Oh-Oh's, or even the Uh-Oh's.  That last one is an acknowledgment of the fact that this decade has been a bit rough- to understate it.  I get Time Magazine every week, and it recently declared that this current ten-year span was the "Decade From Hell". The article listed horrible things that happened every year beginning in 2000.  There were a lot of them, terror attacks here and abroad, a couple of wars, the financial collapse, awful natural disasters.  I suppose you could find similar examples for a lot of other decades too, I'm sure the 30's and the 40's were no picnic.  But at least they have a name!

Ten years ago, we were all very worried about Y2K, and we all accepted that as a name for the year 2000, so we could call this decade the "2K's".   Wait .....how about this?  "The KK's".  That would be GREAT for KKTV!

My only other idea is the "20-oh's".  I do acknowledge that it sounds a little like something Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee would make.  How about 20-oh's with meatballs.

There may be no good answer for what to call this decade.  The frustrating part is, even if we come up with a GREAT one.....we've got to start all over again.....there's no good name for the next decade either.

"Twen-Teens"?

We'll talk again soon.

Don
